"New Look Exteriors provided fast, quality service, for a great price. They replaced damaged siding above my garage with the original manufacturer's siding. It was exactly the right color and type. NLE sales' representative, Z., was friendly and knowledgeable. He identified what needed to be done had a proposal to me quickly. The inside staff NLE, C., knew my name and made sure I knew what was next in the project and the timeline. The NLE install crew, led by G., was fast and efficient. Siding looks great. I recommend these guys. (February, 2024)."

"We needed to have the siding on one side of our home replaced because of heat damage. Home Genius gave us estimates on various materials, and advice on what type of siding we needed to avoid the problem in the future. Color matching was very important since we only needed replacement one side of the house, and the new siding matches very well. The two men who installed the siding were both friendly and professional. They did a great job. The Project Manager came when the job was finished to make certain we were happy with the work. We would definitely call Home Genius for any future needs."

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"Everything Zach did was excellent. I especially like the James Hardie brand fiber cement siding he put on our chimney: he was able to perfectly match it to the other wooden siding on our house, so it looks great and we can trust it'll protect the chimney. It's been a stormy summer since he put it up and we've had no leaks or other issues. The roof looks great, too. He and his assistant were professional and prompt. I'm very happy with the work they did and will certainly hire them again."

"Our old house on the Northside of Pittsburgh was in need of an exterior facelift and a new front porch to replace the one that had collapsed. I met with Dave LaBovick of Exceptional Exteriors and we agreed upon a price, which my wife and I found quite reasonable. The work on the vinyl siding began about a week later and took only a half a day to wrap up. The job was done to our complete satisfaction, The before and after is like night and day. Another crew arrived a few days later to do the porch and sidewalk. They began work on a Thursday afternoon and were finished 24 hours later. Once again, we are very happy with the result. In both cases, they removed all debris and left-over building materials associated with the job. We are not only completely satisfied with the work that Exceptional Exteriors did for us, we are looking forward to hiring them again for our next home project."

"I had a salesperson come out from Doing It Right. They arrived right on time, asked what work I wanted done, etc, and walked around the house for a bit and told me that they would be right back in. Note that they never actually went up on the roof - unlike several other contractors that I've had out between this and my garage project. The salesperson said that their insurance company wouldn't cover them if they had an accident without having a contract. This was kind of surprising to me, and quite honestly felt either like a lie or like they have a crappy insurance policy. Then I sat down and we went over a very detailed contract about everything that would be done. I very much appreciated the detail in the contract, outlining exactly what work would be performed and to what specifications. Some items would be marked N/A, or there might be options that could be checked, such as a california cut/weave valley vs aluminum open cut, etc. I was also showed the really cool software they use to calculate the roof size using satellite imagery and such. They went on and on about their Platinum Preferred status with Owens Corning, giving quite the sales pitch. I was waiting to see how huge the final bid amount was going to be. To my surprise, it wasn't. Actually, it was about *half* the bid amount of another roofer. Well, this all sounded great. I was, of course, skeptical so I read through the contract in more detail. There were a lot of oddities - for instance, they say "california weave" for valleys, but by all accounts online, valleys can either be a "weave" a "cut", a "california cut", or an open valley with a metal channel. So when they say "california weave" it kinda felt like they're leaving open space for if their sub-contractors screw up and do a weave rather than the proper cut. Also, it seems the general consensus is that the metal channel is more durable and doesn't get debris - so that would cost an additional $200. They couldn't give me clear up-front pricing on how much it would cost to paint/patch/fix the box gutters, if required (again, they didn't go on the roof), so who knows what that could end up costing. I asked some detailed follow-up questions about permits, dumpsters, employee vs sub-contracting, gutters, wood replacement, etc. And when they responded, they told me that my job was going to be too small, under their minimum 10-square size unless I also had them do the porch roof as well. Of course, this would add another $1300 to the cost. Odd that even with their fancy roofing calculating software that they never noticed it was under the 10-square minimum. I had a couple more followup questions, and at this point they got back to me and basically cancelled and said that they weren't the right company, that they don't like to come out to do small city jobs, and had a bunch of excuses. I was super frustrated, because I was leaning towards this company and had spent a decent amount of time researching them, communicating, etc, and it was for nothing. At the end of the day, I suspect that either the salesperson bid too low for the job and they didn't admit it, or that they didn't actually have the confidence that they could do the job right due to what I think are extremely basic minor roofing complexities such as framing and maintaining box gutters (which are very common in Pittsburgh). It's a bummer, but luckily there are other competent contractors to pick between as well - perhaps with a bit more honesty and ability to stick to their bids."

Siding questions, answered by experts

While vinyl is the less expensive option, composite siding has been known to be more durable than vinyl. In addition, because it is made from recycled materials, it is a more ecologically-friendly choice. Composite siding is also more luxurious looking and comes in a much wider range of styles and colors.

Caulking should be re-applied roughly every five years. It's natural for a home to settle and separate caulking from joints, so it's a good idea to assess the home every two years. A consistent siding maintenance schedule will help you see if the caulking is needed and address any potential issues before they occur.

Wood clapboard siding needs frequent sealing to keep it in top condition—likely every two to three years. A sealant helps protect it from both moisture and sunlight damage. Your weather and climate will affect how often you need to seal the siding, but the pros recommend sealing it every couple of years. More durable woods in milder climates may not need to be sealed quite as often.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

If you’re wondering how to clean clapboard siding, the approach depends on its material and condition. Siding in good shape may need only light soap and spray from the hose, while older siding often requires more thorough treatment. For serious cleaning, power washing can remove caked-on dirt, but you should consider hiring a professional to avoid causing damage in the process.
