"Jimmy was very knowledgeable and patient in explaining what was needed in our crawl space. He tore all wet / moldy insulation ,replaced all rotten beams, installed the humidifier and did the entire encapsulation. He came on a weekend to meet with to explain the processes in person. ( we live out of state ) We Highly recommend this company."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, insulated vinyl siding increases the R-value of your home. Depending on the quality and brand of the insulated vinyl, you can get an R-value that is up to 5 times greater than traditional vinyl siding. This can be fantastic for homeowners who are trying to lower their utility costs.

If you have bubble wrap lying around the house and you don’t care about the odd look, taping bubble wrap over a window is a very affordable way to insulate it. Another inexpensive option for insulating windows is to add new caulk around the glass. This step quickly cuts down on air drafts for older windows, and a tube of caulk only costs a few dollars. Adding plastic shrink film around the glass is another cost-effective option. You can purchase a kit of plastic film for a few dollars per window.

The lifespan of insulation depends on the material type. Fiberglass can last between 80 and 100 years, but it is important to start checking it around the 15-year mark. Spray foam has a lifespan of up to 100 years, and mineral wool can last up to 100 years. Cellulose, an eco-friendly option, has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

Ideally, you can add new insulation to your existing insulation. However, some circumstances require you to remove old insulation before adding any new insulation:

  • If the insulation is over 15 years old

  • If the insulation is wet or moldy

  • If it is vermiculite insulation

  • If you see signs of pest infestation

Removing old insulation is best left to a pro who can safely dispose of potential moldy or asbestos-ridden insulation.

Bubble wrap is better for moving since it can be cut to size, whereas dish foam comes in precut sheets that are harder to manipulate. However, if you’re packing items like dishes, wine glasses, picture frames, or mirrors, dish foam will protect them better. Ensure you measure your box beforehand so you know what size dish foam to purchase.
