"We hired USA Insulation to blow insulation into the ceiling above our garage. Their customer service team was very responsive, had great communication regarding visits, and provided a quote onsite after viewing the job. The job was completed as promised and all the workers were professional and courteous. I also liked the insulating material they used which did not give off fumes like some foam insulation, and was not itchy like fiberglass insulation."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Doing so will more or less eliminate the risk of mold growing on your garage ceiling insulation. You can also install a self-draining dehumidifier to help remove moisture, or opt for a foam board insulation or spray foam insulation that won’t harbor moisture and mold.

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.

Regular inspections for moisture damage, pest infestations, and proper R-value performance help maintain efficiency.

Yes, you can install insulation over ductwork, and doing so can save you money. Without insulation, the HVAC unit must work harder to force warm or cool air around the home, and once the air reaches the vent, it may not be the correct temperature. Insulating HVAC ducts makes your system work more efficiently, saving you money on heating and cooling bills.

Yes, PEX pipes should be insulated in certain situations. While insulation is not always necessary for pipes running through insulated interior or external walls, it is recommended for any pipes located in uninsulated rooms, unheated areas, or outside, especially in regions with cold winters. The primary reason is to prevent freezing. Although PEX is more resistant to cracking from freezing than other materials, repeated freezing and thawing can weaken the pipes over time, increasing the risk of a burst.
