"Brian had done drywall work in my garage a year earlier. I needed more work after I had some piping replaced. Brick and stucco are a lot more different. You must use picture hanging clips designed for brick walls, or use a plaster rail system with adjustable hooks. Any other type of hanging hardware will cause damage to the bricks behind. You won’t be able to really use nails, either, because they’re not strong enough to go into the bricks.

You can usually tell if you have plaster or drywall by touch (plaster is harder, colder, and smoother than drywall) or by tapping on it (drywall sounds hollow, plaster does not). If you still cannot tell, peek under an outlet cover and check the cut edges. The rough edges show the composition of the wall. You will see either drywall (two paper sheets sandwiching gypsum material) or only plaster material (no paper sheets).

There are a handful of reasons why your drywall anchors are breaking. Using the wrong type of anchor is the most common problem, so always make sure you’re using the best option for a particular project. That there are electrical wires or plumbing where you’ve placed an anchor or that your drywall is weak are two other possible causes. 

Textured walls are a great way to hide imperfections left over by drywall installation, but many homeowners feel like it’s an outdated look, despite there being so many types of drywall texture. And while the textured walls of today are a far cry from the popcorn ceilings and faux stucco of our grandmother’s homes, if you want a more modern look or you want to install wallpaper, it’s time to smooth out your walls.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.
