Small jobs welcome

"Joel Miller responded to our request to remove 2 large trees and brush (leaving the wood), and grind 3 large stumps. His estimate was HALF of the quotes provided by others! Joel's performance was AMAZING!!! He worked alone on our project and never stopped until everything was done. He is a one-man professional who did it all and appeared tireless! He worked in 98+ degree heat and 100% humidity, he climbed, cut, dropped each tree with accuracy and impressive "ease". He even removed and raked up the sawdust in the yard, leaving it ready for grass seed, and cut the remaining wood to 18" lengths, thereby helping our son as he was taking the wood for firewood. Joel simply did a highly professional and stunning job. This young man is deserving of YOUR business. He is beginning his own company and will work just as tirelessly for you. If you are looking for reasonable pricing, a hard worker, and a top-notch professional, use Joel Miller. He also does other landscape jobs and I'm sure he does those just as professionally."

"Austin was friendly and professional. He and his coworker worked well together and finished the job quickly. Our half stone and half siding house in the woods looks great! The surface areas look fantastic, too! We would hire this company again, for sure."

Small jobs welcome

"We had a great experience with Miller Hardscapes. Obadiah, the company owner, reached out to me as I was looking to get quotes from multiple hardscaping businesses for a paver patio with built in fire bit. Prices were higher than expected and everyone was trying to sell me on a 3D design which I didn't really need nor did I want to spend more money on. Obadiah understood the look I was going for and produced a straight-forward drawing with dimensions and very reasonable quote after our first phone call. Best of all he was able to complete the project way before the others. He sources his pavers locally from Nitterhouse in Chambersburg which made it easy to check out the colors in person. He was honest about his experience on past projects and that Miller Hardscapes was a newer business. He has 7 years prior experience working for another local hardscaping firm. I was home while he and his team completed the project and was very impressed with their thoroughness and hard work. They worked long days and got so much accomplished including proper grading, tamping, etc... Miller Hardscaping is a great option because Obadiah and his team do solid work, are straight forward, priced well, and produce an awesome product. I'm already considering them for other potential landscaping/hardscaping projects and recommending to friends and neighbors."

"I have to say the Williams' seem like such nice people but I found I had to be careful to watch what was being done and ask for corrections. They speak Spanish and Mrs. Williams does the interpreting. I think language did cause some difficulty but quality of work is not based on language spoken. First day was done well then quality of work went downhill from there. They never taped off trim or removed door hinges or knobs. Paint is were it should not be. I'm still finding places that have to have paint removed. I pointed out several places where they goofed and they did make an effort to correct them. But many goofs are still present. I had to repaint several places myself and I keep finding more places that were poorly done. They did some caulking too and it had to be redone a week later. The cost kept increasing as well."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

For Bradford pears, damage from storms is common, and if the trunk splits, it can pose a danger to people and surrounding structures. The best thing to do in that instance is to have the tree removed. If there’s only minor damage to the branches, pruning away the damaged parts is the first order of business. You may also want to consult a professional arborist to make sure the tree is healthy.

Most trees can be successfully transplanted while they are young, but pines, walnuts, and some oak tree varieties are more difficult to move because their root systems grow deeper than most other trees. Also, trees adapted to sandy soil with wide root systems like beeches, willows, and aspens are harder to dig out because their roots spread much farther out from the trunk. In these cases, unless the trees are very young and small, it’s a good idea to consult a tree planting professional.

If you don’t cut down a dead, dying, or diseased tree, it can become a nesting place for pests like mosquitos, bees, beetles, wasps, fly larvae, and more. Some pests will live in the tree, while others will feed off the decaying wood. Unhealthy trees are also more likely to fall over, potentially injuring people and causing damage to your property.

Trees that flower in the spring—like dogwood, cherry, magnolia, and pear—should not be pruned during the winter. These spring-flowering plants grow buds on old growth, so you’ll actually remove what would’ve been gorgeous flowering foliage. Instead, wait to prune until right after they bloom, when the flowers fade.

Your local government is usually in charge of pruning trees on public property, and the power company is responsible for trees near power lines (even if they’re on your property). Whether or not they top these trees depends on their approach to pruning. You won’t be able to do much to control this, but you can contact them to find out more about their pruning process.
