"I verified that the contractor was registered as a Pennsylvania Home Improvement contractor.  When i called and left a message, he promptly responded to my call and when I asked if I could have references, he offered to let me come see the large decking project he was working on. It was beautiful and I had an opportunity to talk with the homeowner.  I gave him my address, and he came to see my project within a couple days.  We discussed possible ways to correct the improper construction of the original deck.

He explained what materials he would use or recommend and why, and was open to my comments about the way he would go about the job and provided  honest feedback about my ideas.

When Jonathan provided the estimate, it was not as detailed as I would have liked, but I trusted him (and he proved trustworthy) to do the job properly and as he had said.  Rather than have him submit another written estimate, I simply confirmed verbally what we had talked about.  We agreed upon a start date, based on another job he was working on, and he kept me informed about a change which allowed him to do my deck sooner than planned. Once he started the job, he arrived promptly in the morning and worked all day unless he had to pick up materials.  Also, he let us  know if he would not be coming.

Though the job site was not cleaned up as neatly as I would have liked at the end of each day, when the job was completed, the site was left clean and neat.  This might be upsetting to some people, but because of his skill and work ethic, it was a small inconvenience to me - not worth being concerned about in the whole scheme of the project.

I paid a 10% deposit - to ascertain the project was scheduled.  The day he started, I paid for materials. The balance was paid when the job was completed.

If you are looking for someone to install a deck, wood or vinyl, and want great workmanship, I recommend you at talk with Jonathan Fisher.  His estimate fell in the midrange of all the proposals I received, and I am pretty certain his workmanship is as good or better as any other contractor i talked with.    I now have a totally maintenance free deck which is such a cosmetic improvement on my house (which has vinyl siding) compared to the wood deck i previously had.  He has my permission to use me as a reference."

Small jobs welcome

"We hired Harveyâ s Home Improvement based on favorable past on-line reviews. He did an excellent job for us. He provided full-service tile install in a walk-in shower enclosure with large tiles. The project looks great! He cleaned up after each dayâ s work; started and finished the project on schedule; and his price was great. My wife and I highly recommend Mr. Harvey."

"I called Marko, sent him a picture id what I wanted, explained my super tight schedule. Marko scheduled an install time, was the right on time. It was raining so he brought his own drop cloths to walk on to protect my floors! Marko was amazing. Excellent pricing. Will hire again and recommend to all I meet!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Natural stone floors, especially pebble-style tiling, are one of the least slippery options for a shower floor. Natural stone has a texture to reduce slickness, and pebble-shaped tiles add more visual and textural contrast while reducing slippage. Vinyl tiles are also designed with anti-slip texture for added safety. If you have a slippery tile, be sure to add a grippy shower mat to reduce the risk of falls.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

Yes, you can use paint if you want to refresh your tile countertops. However, you must be mindful of the type of paint you use. Look for options explicitly created for tile that are also waterproof and durable. Over time, the paint will chip, so this is not considered a long-term solution for busy kitchens.

The rule tells you how to cut tile to install it in a corner. The 3/4/5 rule recommends that you should have 3 feet across on one straight line, four feet on the other perpendicular line, and 5 feet of length from the end of one of the lines to the other. You’re making a right triangle with the tile, and the hypotenuse (the line across from where the 3-foot lie and 4-foot line meet) should be 5 feet long.

The best paints for shower tiles include epoxy, latex, or acrylic. Ideally, you should look for paints that are waterproof and mildew-resistant if you plan to paint shower or other bathroom tiles. You can even find waterproof paints made specifically for tiled surfaces, which will be the best option for shower tile paint that lasts as long as possible.
