"In the attic, we had wooden slats that covered the floor so they had to go under the floorboards. Although we were told by the salesman that there would always be a person on the other side of the wall to check for problems, the second guy was not watching and they blew a hole in the ceiling of the bedroom ( see pictures). They assured us that they would fix the hole, spackle it and repaint the ceiling. They did spackle the hole but only painted the area that they fixed - not the whole ceiling. And they did a lousy spackling job. We had to get someone else to smooth out the spackle and repaint the ceiling. We could have pushed to get them to fix the ceiling but it was late on the last day and we wanted the job done. As for the gel on the outside, the truck broke down due to the heat of the day and it took 3 days to finish the rest of the job including fixing the ceiling and the inside walls. Although the salesperson, did a first investigation of the house and said it could all be done from the outside, the workers found that one bedroom was covered in concrete so they had to drill from the inside of one of the bedrooms leaving many holes to be spackled. This time it was not so bad and we were able to sand and repaint that bedroom. But the workers could have done a better job of cleanup of the sparkle. It was all over the baseboard and the rug and we had to use rags to clean it up. We realize that things happen. And maybe we were too hopeful based on the salesman's pitch. But we would rather have had the salesperson tell us the truth about the possibility of drilling holes in the inside of the house even though he did a thorough inspection. All in all, we are hoping that insulating our house will save us a lot of money in heating costs. The manager was very accommodating, we saved some money by paying with a check vs a credit card. The workers were very nice and the lead person was very knowledgeable. Any renovation is stressful. We would probably recommend them because now we know what to expect. This company was recommended to us by a number of people. We have no doubt that the product itself is excellent. For that reason, we expected it all to go smoothly. It did not. Everything that could go wrong, basically did. It all got fixed but ... We did not plan for a hole in the ceiling, the truck breaking down and go into the shop to fix the problem with the gel overheating and not coming out of the hose fast enough, the concrete in one of the bedrooms that meant that all the holes had to be drilled on the inside of the bedroom and we had to repaint. So for those reasons, we are giving them a rating of fair. We hope your experience will be a lot better than ours !!"

"JA Drywall LLC really helped ease to the stress of our kitchen remodel. Juan was prompt to response to my initial phone call, while Isa was out the next day (a holiday weekend nonetheless) to measure and get us a very reasonable estimate. Within a few days, our walls and ceiling were up and Noel was putting the finishing touches on the sanding. Without these guys, our project wouldve been delayed for weeks! Big thanks to a great crew that does great work! Will definitely be in touch when we look to tackle our next project."

"I really liked how the owner(Ron) met with my wife and I for the estimate and was my contact the whole time. The product is great, the installers even better and the best part was the price! The installers were professional, organized, well spoken, and really clean. It was actually cleaner then when they arrived. Our insulated siding and solid composite windows stopped all the loud noise of passing vehicles and noisey neighbors, as well as reduced our heating and cooling cost by at least 30%... I could go on and on, but there's not enough room or time to say how pleased we are with the KES Team. We already recommended and plan to use them for our addition to our home!!"

"I found Doyle Drywall company on Angie's List and based on his outstanding reviews decided to hire his company to dry wall our entire 2nd floor. My experience with Larry was excellent throughout. He quickly came to assess the work and provided me with a reasonable quote for the work and time it would take to complete. Larry started the job on a wednesday and by the following monday was complete.

Larry was very fair and honest when explaining that he can do the best job with what he had to work with, structure and framing wise. Our home is about 90 years old so not all the wall and ceiling frames were perfectly straight but Larry did an excellent job hanging good straight dry wall and any structural imperfections were definitely minimized. We could have reframed the entire 2nd floor but because of cost and time we decided not to do that.

Once we took out the ceilings we realized that we would need to insulate the roof and Larry was able to provide us with a last minute quote for labor and materials so that the insulation could be  put up right before they hung the drywall. The dry wall job was $3200 and an additional $600 charge for the insulation material and labor to put it in place. All told we got a completely insulated roof and drywall on all the walls and ceilings for a total of $3800 (labor & materials)  which I believe was a very fair price. He even replaced a panel of drywall in the bathroom, that was accidentally damaged when we did the demo work on the other side of the wall, at no additional charge.

Overall communication, punctuality and quality of work was excellent and I am very pleased with the job that was done. I would definitely use this company again and would refer Doyle Drywall Co to anyone needing a good drywall job done at a reasonable price. Thanks again Doyle Drywall!"

"It's been a few years and I couldn't be happier with my new roof. We had a little bit of a hiccup during the job - it took about a day and a half and went into the evening hours, when the salesperson had assured me they would be leaving by 6 PM. But a foreman came to discuss it with us and we worked it out. All of the wood underneath had to be replaced and the crew was able to get it done. It's very beautiful and hadn't had any issues."

"Person who visited was very polite and noted that what I purchased was likely not something that would meet my expectations.  I wanted an energy audit, how my systems could be improved in home, lighting, heating, insulation and air conditioners.  What I got was a list of things they could work on and the price to do that work.  The work list in no way was considered an energy audit, rather it was a punch list of things I could do based on their visual inspection.  I did not have a comparison of work and benefit/savings calculation.  There was no checklist of inefficiencies and how that translated into energy losses. For example, multiple hi hat lights in house, they spoke about boxing and insulating a few, less than 10, when I have almost 90 in house.  Overall I was disappointed, the tech who came said the offering needed to be better presented prior to start of work."

"Great! The technician assured me my system was in great condition. He checked the coolant, inspected all parts and gave suggestions of how to get the air to come out a little better through our old vents. He was honest, knowledgeable and polite. Very happy with their service."

"Joe started while we were on vacation.  I was a bit hesitant but I thought it would be easier for both of us if we weren't here.  I moved out as much furniture as I could since we were doing floors and carpet when Joe left.  This probably helped him a bit.  He told me initially it would only take a week.  It ended up taking two weeks because Joe and Todd did a truly exceptional job.  They are both perfectionists and it showed in the finish product.  The cracks were totally gone...something I never expected!  Some rooms took more coats of paint than anticipated but I was never charged anything extra.  Joe told me when he left that he would return after the flooring and carpet were installed to repair any damage that was done during the floor installation.  He was true to  his word!  Joe and Todd came promptly each day and stayed as late as they needed to insure the job was completed as quickly as possible.  Joe and Todd were both amazing and I would never hesitate to recommend them.  They are both true professionals and really nice guys!  Exceptional on all counts!!!!  The house looks truly amazing and believe me when I say I'm a perfectionist.  Thankfully Joe is more of a perfectionist than I am.  Great, great, great job!

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, there are government incentives available in some regions for insulating air ducts as part of energy-efficient upgrades. These incentives aim to encourage homeowners and businesses to improve energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint. To determine whether you qualify for such incentives, check with your local utility company or government agencies. They often offer rebates, tax credits, or other financial incentives that can help offset the cost of duct insulation projects.

Yes. Bathroom insulation requires a vapor barrier. As a matter of fact, bathrooms and kitchens are the two areas of the home that should always get a vapor barrier because of the excess moisture. If you don’t have a vapor barrier in place in these rooms, the moisture will build up and eventually lead to mold and bacteria, not to mention the destruction of the insulation.

Expect your home insulation project to take between five and 12 hours to complete on average for batts or boards and two to five hours for spray foam or blown-in insulation. It might take longer if you need to remove your home’s existing insulation, you have a higher-than-average square footage, or accessibility is limited.

It's essential to use insulation materials specifically designed for air ducts. Common types of duct insulation materials include fiberglass, foam board, and reflective foil. These insulation materials have the right properties to withstand the temperature and airflow conditions within the ductwork. Using the appropriate insulation not only ensures efficient temperature control but also prevents potential safety hazards or the release of harmful particles into the air.

Structural insulated panels and rigid foam boards have the highest R-value of any insulation that contractors commonly use, with R-values reaching up to around 8.0. These types of insulation are best in extremely cold climates, but they’re generally preferred for new construction, as they can be challenging to retrofit. Blown-in and loose fill insulation provide the next best insulative value, provided the installation is done properly. It’s important to choose an insulation type that meets your needs based on climate, as maximizing R-value may not always be financially worthwhile if you live in a moderate climate.
