"Fast Estimate , had many estimates from other companies and Waterproofing One was the best price for Us , Joe was very confident and knowledgeable and gave Us good suggestions for our leaking basement, the crew that installed the French drain inside were great, install looks very professional. I figured we’d have a mess to clean up after the install understandably. But wow they did an incredible job cleaning up afterwards. Not a speck, they even spent time cleaning off the driveway and front lawn. We have been through one major rain storm since the install and not a drip of water. So far so good , we are getting an expected 3” in the next 24 hours and it’s a relief to know I don’t have to stress about rain storms anymore!"

"I was referred to this company through HomeServe. I had a severely damaged basement pipe that ran to a second bathroom of ours. Not only did Paradigm Plumbing figure out the problem on the spot, they were back in 24 hours with everything they needed in order to complete the job. A problem that was bothering me for months they had figured out in 24 hours. I could not be happier with them. They have incredible communication, were very timely and protected everything that was outside of the bathroom they worked on. I can't recommend these guys enough."

"This was a great breath of fresh air! Truly wonderful. Dan was incredible. He checked everything thoroughly, every crack was inspected and every concern was addressed. He was professional, friendly and knew what he was doing. He didn't try to sell us anything that we didn't need. He gave us a list of items we could do to make the space more waterproof, like caulking around the bottom of our double doors. He also suggested that we keep an eye on the cracks and take photos to document if the cracks spread. He was happy to hear that we were very happy with his inspection. This was the best free estimate we've ever received. He didn't try to sell us anything. He mentioned that they had a dehumidifier that is also an air purifier and would likely help with my allergies. So, if the other dehumidifier ever breaks, I know where I'm headed to buy a new one! Dan is part of a company that is extremely professional. They sent out a letter prior to our appointment to introduce Dan to us. It had his photo, a bio and even listed his family member's names. I felt like I knew him even before he showed up. This is a great way to do business. They even sent a book on basements that went into great detail about what could go wrong and how they can fix it. I enjoyed reading the book. I learned more about basements than I ever thought possible. I can't recommend them enough. If you ever have a basement water issue - CALL DAN at BQ Basement Systems! He'll provide you with the facts, truth and nothing less, or in my case nothing more!"

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

While water in your basement is unlikely to make you sick unless it’s coming from a sewage backup, mold is likely to start to grow in wet areas within 24 hours, and mold can make you sick. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), inhaling mold spores can cause allergy symptoms, including runny nose, itchy eyes, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and itchy skin. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory issues like asthma and immunocompromised individuals are at an elevated risk of symptoms when inhaling mold spores.

Several types of insulation are effective for crawl spaces, with spray foam and rigid foam boards being two of the best options. Closed-cell spray foam insulation is a strong choice because it effectively repels moisture, resists biological growth, seals the air, and provides excellent thermal protection, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Rigid foam insulation boards are another excellent material as they insulate well, resist water damage, and will not settle over time like fiberglass or cellulose.

If you don’t wish to dig it out and convert it into a finished basement, you can still encapsulate your crawl space to protect it from damage for an average cost of $5,500. Finishing a crawl space beyond this isn’t really worthwhile, as the low ceilings mean you won’t be able to use the area as living space.

While a standard gutter system is widely considered the most effective way to prevent water damage to your home's foundation, several alternatives are available. These options can be used on their own in certain climates or as supplementary protection.

Common alternatives include:

  • Rain Chains: These are decorative chains that hang from the roof's edge, guiding rainwater to the ground.

  • Drip Edges: These metal strips are installed at the edge of the roof to direct water away from the fascia. While often used with gutters, they can be paired with a ground-level solution but are typically not sufficient on their own.

  • Rain Dispersal Systems: These systems work by breaking up the heavy sheet of water flowing off the roof, dispersing it over a wider area.

  • French Drains: This ground-level system uses a perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench to collect and redirect water runoff away from the house.

  • Drip Paths: Placed directly below the roofline, these paths made of concrete, stone, or other materials prevent soil erosion and guide water away.

It's important to note that some alternatives like rain chains and dispersal systems may not be adequate in regions with heavy rainfall because they don't divert water away from the foundation as effectively as a full gutter system. Ground-based solutions like French drains can be very effective but are often more expensive and can affect your landscaping and curb appeal. Many experts recommend installing a full gutter system for maximum protection and using alternatives as supplementary measures.

Several factors can impact the cost of waterproofing your basement. Some of the most common cost factors include:

  • Location

  • Square footage

  • Cause of the water leak

  • Type of foundation

  • Accessibility

  • Waterproofing method

  • Materials

  • Contractor experience and availability

  • Engineering reports, if needed

  • Structural and other repairs

  • Permits
