"We love our basement remodel. Peter, Alex and his team were here when they said theyâ d be here, completed the job as described, and kept us updated along the way. The basement now looks and feels clean and bright. The additional space doesnâ t feel like a basement at all and is enjoyed by the whole family. We highly recommend Lux Renovations."

"Our house had a very old and outdated bathroom and some water damage to a second bathroom's ceiling.  Contacted several places to try and arrange an estimate.  Tom was very quick to return my call and arranged a meeting quickly to discuss what we were looking to do and to spitball some ideas.  Other places either didn't bother to get back to us or seemed pretty disinterested right from the outset.  We narrowed it down to Total Home and another company.  Tom had the best ideas for the bathroom and was always extremely responsive and always available to talk so we selected him and we couldn't be happier.  His responsiveness is fantastic and his guys did a tremendous job.
A few days before work was to begin, the missus and I discussed adding recessed lighting in the living room.  Tom came out, took a look and had an estimate for us later that day.  The wife and I were happy with the estimate, so added that work to the bill as well.
When it was time to get down to business, Earl and Quinton came out bright and early and were always prompt, professional and clean.  We have an old house and, as such, the house may not always play nice, forcing you to improvise and think on your feet.  Earl ran into little surprises like this a couple of times and always came to us and clearly presented the issue and the potential solutions for us to choose from.  Earl and Quinton really made it easy.
My wife and I could not be happier with the work that we had done and with Tom and his crew from Total Home Solution.  We will definitely be contacting Total Home in the future to work on our kitchen and basement when we have the means to modernize them as well.
I know lots of people who have nightmare stories about contractors --- our experience was an absolute pleasure from start to finish.  I think it was the first time I was ever happy to hand over a check for $5000!

"It went perfectly.  It turned out exactly how we wanted it to.  We picked out all the materials with Fran's son, who was a tremendous help and very knowledgeable.  It made things so easy.
The employees were very nice and extremely talented.  We had a deadline and they made sure that it was met with time to spare.  We have received numerous compliments on our deck and next year we are going to add a roof to it.
I would and have recommended Francis White Builders to anyone looking for construction work.  In the past Fran has also done a basement for us, which turned out beautiful.  He does such quality work.  It is always a pleasure to work with him.
Thank you.

"The crew did a wonderful job, turning a bare cement basement into a cozy getaway. They framed up and insulated the walls and painting the ceiling black to make it seem larger. They also fixed some rotted railings and installed two new basement windows. Very professional, and were careful to keep things clean."

"We hired Mitch and Bob to finish our basement. They gave us a good and through estimate. Mitch made a couple visits prior to starting the job to make sure we were comfortable with the design, layout and timeline and was very open to suggestions. What is great is that they only take up one job at a time and are committed to it. They were on a consistent schedule. The quality of the job is excellent and everything was very collaborative. Would definitely hire them again if needed and recommend to others. They also took care of many smaller requests we had during the time they finished our basement. They were professional and reasonably priced for the excellent quality of work they did and extremely reliable. Thanks Mitch and Bob!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Rebar is an essential part of reinforcing a basement floor, as not having it can impact its structural integrity. It helps absorb the tension factors that contribute to cracks in your floor and strengthens its load-bearing capabilities by evenly distributing the weight. Not including rebar could lead to an unstable floor, so don’t skip it!

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Yes, in most cases, finishing a basement is worth the cost. The project adds valuable, usable square footage to your home and typically provides a return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 75%. For example, an average basement refinishing project costing $32,000 could add between $22,400 and $24,000 to your property's value. The final value added depends on factors like your location, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the features you include, such as a living space, bedroom, or bathroom. To be officially counted in your home's total square footage, the finished space must comply with all local building codes, including requirements for points of egress. However, in areas prone to flooding, a finished basement might be seen as a liability by potential buyers and could potentially decrease your home's value.

Making a window in a basement larger costs an average of $4,200. You’ll need to pay an average of $550 to have a structural engineer plan the project, $500 to $1,500 for the installation labor, and an average of $2,200 for the excavation and window well installation. The remainder will go toward pulling permits, installing trim, and repairing drywall on the interior.

The most challenging part of finishing a basement is addressing moisture control. Basement waterproofing is an essential task that requires a professional’s skills and knowledge. If you don’t properly waterproof your finished basement, it’ll be vulnerable to dampness, water damage, and mold growth. Ensuring proper insulation and ventilation to combat these issues while meeting building codes adds complexity to your remodeling project.
