"I cannot recommend Modern Scapes highly enough! My wife and I decided the pandemic was a good time to do some major work on our backyard, which had been neglected since we moved in six years ago; it lacked shape and had drainage problems. We had seen a sign for Modern Scapes about a year prior, outside a house nearby, which had installed a new fence that looked far better than most do in our neighborhood--modern, striking, and clearly well-built. We called the number we had written down from the sign to make an appointment for an estimate. We met Joe, the business owner, and mmediately knew we were in excellent hands. He listened to our concerns and ideas, offered his own valuable insight, and together we made a plan, first for a new wood fence to define the back edge of the backyard along with a new drainage system, and then eventually to install a bluestone patio with a wood pergola. Every aspect of both projects was an absolute pleasure. Joe was clear about the dates he and his team would be working, and then kept to those dates (one of the projects even finished ahead of time). The pricing process was easy and clear, and Joe was wonderful to work with, personable and professional at every turn. But what's most notable are the results, which are spectacular. Joe is a perfectionist, and his attention to detail is apparent in all aspects of his work. He listened to all of our ideas--even our less clear ones--and found elegant ways to implement them. We ended up with a fence and a patio/pergola that people stop to compliment, all the time. As one of our friends said, after seeing the completed fence, "You just don't get a fence like that in Binghamton"--meaning that beautiful and well made. With Joe, you do!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

You can't build a fence against your neighbor's fence if it touches or is attached to it unless you get explicit permission from your neighbor. Most municipalities recommend building a fence about two feet away from your neighbor's fence to allow access for fence repair and mowing.

Rabbits are remarkable jumpers, capable of leaping to impressive heights. Generally, they can jump up to 2 to 3 feet vertically, thanks to their strong hind legs and muscular build. This exceptional jumping ability isn't just for fun—it helps them escape predators and reach vegetation otherwise out of their reach. Their agility and power make them one of the animal kingdom's most agile jumpers, adapting their natural talents to navigate their environment with finesse.

Whether you need a permit to build or install a fence depends on several factors, including your location, the fence's height, its placement in your yard, and the materials used. In many cities and highly populated areas, a permit is required, especially for fences taller than 6 feet. Conversely, rural areas may have fewer restrictions. Typically, backyard privacy fences 6 feet or shorter do not require a permit, while front yard fences often have a lower height limit, sometimes as low as 3.5 feet. There can also be exceptions for properties in mixed residential-commercial zones. It's best to check with your local building inspection or zoning department to understand the specific requirements, height restrictions, and location rules for your area. A professional fence installer can help you navigate this process and often secure the necessary permits for you, though this may extend the project timeline.

How long a wood fence lasts depends on the type of wood and its style. The design of a shadow box fence makes it more durable than other fence types because the alternating pickets disperse the weight across the rails. As a result, you won’t have to worry as much about sagging or failing pickets. However, remember that the hollow design of a shadow box fence makes it more difficult to apply the sealer, which is crucial to extending its life.

While they can be closer, the maximum distance between fence posts for residential fences is 8 feet. This ensures the panels are adequately supported by the fence posts. This is usually dictated by the width of the panel, which is typically between 5 and 8 feet. While narrower panels will require more posts, they’ll be lighter and easier to work with than wider panels that are the same height.
