"Excellent! Joe is the best. I found him on Angie’s List last November and he repaired our upstairs toilet then. This time he fixed our kitchen faucet handle and our downstairs toilet, I plan to call him for all of our plumbing needs from now on. He’s highly skilled, neat, and personable. He pays attention to the details. He wears a mask and even disinfects his shoes before walking in the house. I highly recommend Joe."

"The project seemed to turn into something unexpected. I have a flush-up toilet that needed a new macerator installed. The pipes were realigned and the macerator installed, but the toilet didn't seem to work right. Their technician Mark immediately went into figuring out what could be wrong. Checking the pipes, analyzing the owner's manual, and calling the manufacturer of the toilet. He ran a few tests and figured out what was wrong. Flush-up toilets are notorious for being difficult, but Mark figured it out. I really appreciate his efforts to resolve this problem. Thanks, Very Satisfied Customer"

"Zoom Drain was great !! Everything was explained by Rob on Friday when he came out. Service was provided the day we called due to hearing gurgleing in the kitchen sink when the toilet was flushed. Rob found a blockage in the drain box outside our house which he cleared. On Sunday we found that we were still having some brief water backup into our basement laundry tub when the bathroom toilet was flushed, Kyle came out that afternoon and determined that part of the issue was that the Municipal Sanitary Drain was running slow. Kyle even pulled the Municipal Manhole cover in the street to confirm that the water level was much higher than expected. He spent the time to make sure our drain was as clear as possible and even called our local borough office to inform them that the Municipal drain seemed to have a blockage. We saw a truck on our street this morning and were informed that a large grease plug was found in the municipal drain on the street next to ours. They cleared it on Sunday night and were checking the line upstream from where the plug was to make sure everything was clear. Thank You Kyle. Thank you Zoom Drain Norristown. Highly recommended !!"

"I would highly recommend Benjamin Franklin plumbing. Jon P and his assistant were fantastic. They showed up on time and immediately asked me questions so that they could understand my issue. I showed them the work and Jon performed an inspection to make sure that was truly the issue and to see if anything else might be causing my leak. He confirmed that he thought the issue was the same and promptly provided me with a quote for various resolutions to my problem. I ended up having Jon and his assistant pull the toilet off and to replace the seal and re-seat the toilet. They finished quickly and ensured me the leak was fixed. Jon also indicated the warranty on the work was good for 1-year and to call if I ran into any issues with their fix. They did a fantastic job and I could not believe how quickly the problem was resolved."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can have a toilet without a septic tank. However, it will have to be a composting toilet. Composting toilets work similarly to aerobic septic systems in that the waste, which sits in a separate compartment below the toilet itself, is slowly broken down by aerobic bacteria. These toilets typically have a vent to get rid of harmful gasses with a fan, which requires a battery. You will have to dispose of waste in the toilet manually every three weeks to every three months, depending on how many people are using the toilet.

A running toilet is not a plumbing emergency, but you will want to try some DIY fixes or call in a plumber to prevent wasting gallons of water. The three most common causes of a running toilet are a broken or dirty flapper, an incorrectly sized chain between the flush lever and flapper, or a float that is out of position.

Putting caulk around a toilet’s base where it touches the flooring can help hold the toilet in place. A more effective way is using caulk with plastic shim wedges. Place the shims underneath the base to steady and stabilize the toilet. Add some caulk to help keep the shims in place and provide a stronger and more lasting stabilization effect.

Whether wall-mounted or floor-mounted toilets are better comes down to personal preference.

Overall, standard floor-mount toilets are less expensive to purchase and install, but they don’t offer the streamlined, modern appearance and adjustable height of wall-hung toilets. Ease of cleaning should also be considered, as wall-hung toilets are easier to clean than standard models.

To drain a broken toilet, place towels or plastic sheeting around the base in case of splashing or overflowing. Next, shut off the toilet’s water supply, usually via a valve on the wall behind the toilet. Begin flushing the handle to remove as much water as possible from the tank and the bowl. Don’t flush the toilet if it’s clogged, though. From there, use a large sponge to soak up any remaining water and wring it over a bucket.
