They consistently showed up on time, kept me informed throughout the project and were proactive in addressing questions and making any necessary adjustments. "The work was awesome, they were on time and worked every day. They cleaned up after their day was complete and were extremely easy to work with through the process. Their workmanship is top notch. I will be using them again to build a barn and eventually to build an addition off the back of my house."

"Our back porch post was beginning to rot at the bottom. We arranged for Dave to replace. When he got here he said it was still in pretty good shape and did not need replacement yet. He was prompt and helpful. We will call him back in the future to replace that posts and some others in front."

"Needed a gate with lock installed on short notice. Ben from A and B General Contracting, reached out to me immediately and was able to get the work done quickly. The carpenter that came to install the gate was very professional and did an excellent job installing the self-closing gate. Highly recommend this company!"

Small jobs welcome

"MD Siding provided a fair quote on a small siding job for a ranch house and also installed new seamless gutters and fascia. David was easy to contact via text or call. Work was done well, worked all day and finished in a timely manner. Everything looks great. Would definitely recommend them."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.
