"Mike, his dad, & crew did an excellent job. To me (I am an engineer) quality paving is all about the prep work for the stone base. Anyone can pave over, but the compacted base is critical to a long lasting driveway. This is where M&M excels. My old driveway (55 years old) was in pieces. I got 6 quotes and all were offering to pave over the old driveway, several did offer to do a new base but prices were much higher. M&M (Mike & his dad with 30 + years experience) knew better & did not offer that as an option. Good thing, because I knew a poor base would result in the new asphalt pavement cracking. M&M started from scratch, (no shortcuts) removing all the old asphalt; compacting the fresh stone base and they did an excellent job of matching the seams in this 4 car wide driveway. They also were good at getting the water to flow off (no puddles in my new driveway). I highly recommend this company. They are very professional and really did an excellent job. Excellent quality companies like M&M Paving Services deserve our business and support."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

A pallet of pavers will cost about $300 to $700 per pallet. Each pallet covers about 56 square feet. The specific price you pay per pallet of pavers will depend on a few factors, including the type of paver you’re buying, the size and shape of the pavers, and how many pavers you need. In some cases, you’ll spend less per pallet if you’re buying in bulk for very large paver patios.

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Yes, it is possible to pave over an existing driveway, but whether it's the right choice depends on several factors. If the underlying structure of your current driveway is still strong, concrete or asphalt resurfacing can be a cost-effective way to prolong its life. However, if your driveway has significant issues like potholes, deep cracks, or other inconsistencies, it is best to remove the old driveway and start from scratch. Key factors to consider include the current driveway's condition, the compatibility of the new material, the added thickness and height, and the necessary surface preparation.
