"Mina did a great job! A foundation company said our house is sinking and will cost $30,000 to fix the issue. Someone told us to first call a structural engineer to see if it’s true. We called Mina and he told us it’s a minor issue and there’s nothing to worry about. Thank you Mina. You saved us $30,000!"

"Mr Mikaeel immediately contacted me once I put in a request on Home Advisor. He explained his services and he offered me more options than I had received from other engineers. Those options included paying less money which I appreciated right away. He knew I didn't have much time to work with and we scheduled the next day. He arrived on time, was very personable, very professional, explained what I needed to know and also gave me great news. I will recommend him to anyone that needs a structural engineer Thank you Home Advisor!"

"Dee finished the drawings in a timely manner. He made revisions to fine tune and included an optional alternate floor plan I requested for a very reasonable up charge. I’m sure I’ll be using Dee again in the future."

"I had a great experience working with Glenwood Engineering LLC. I was in the process of selling my home and the buyer's mortgage company was requiring a structural engineer to certify the home was structurally sound as the joists in the basement had some previous termite damage. An engineer was able to come out in less than a week and although the initial report indicated some repairs that would be necessary everything needed was clearly stated. I was able to get a contractor to come do the repairs and Glenwood Engineering LLC was able to send the engineer out for a reinspection only two days after the repairs were complete. The customer service was outstanding and thanks to how quickly they were able to send an engineer out both for inspection and for reinspection we were able to close on time. I would definitely use their services again."

"I recently had extensive structural problems in a home I purchased. Grimaldi Contractors were amazing. Mark was there with his professional staff and made the process so easy every step of the way. Everything was explained to me thoroughly and I felt at ease knowing that the job was being done right. I was more than happy with the end result. They are truly experts in structural repair. "Anthony and John were a pleasure to work with! They took our vision and made it a reality! Their suggestions in some of the planning were spot on and made our house our dream home. They were responsive to our requests and would take the time to explain to us why they were suggesting certain features. So easy to work with, friendly, funny and timely! True professionals with the added touch of feeling like you’re working with family. They were truly invested in our project and it truly showed in EVERY detail. I would welcome the opportunity to work Bruttaniti Architecture in the future and would certainly recommend them to anyone for any of your architecture needs!!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

On average, 6 inches of concrete can hold around 150 pounds per square foot, but the exact weight that 6 inches of concrete can hold depends on factors such as the type of concrete, the reinforcement method, soil conditions below, and structural design. If you’re concerned about the longevity of your concrete patio, walkway, or driveway, hire a professional to help you choose an appropriate concrete thickness and reinforcement method for your needs.

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.

Stone, marble, and brick are common building materials of Neoclassical architecture, though you will also find wood flooring and a range of natural stone tiles. Since several home styles fall under Neoclassical architects' umbrella, a range of building materials—including traditional wood framing—will make an appearance.
