"JIm was AWESOME! Super responsive to text and phone calls and was sure to followup to ensure the work was completed to satisfaction. I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for any masonry work, specifically to repointing and chimney repair. His crew was clean and out of the way the entire time they were here and we're very attentive to our asks regarding our pets. 10/10 would recommend"

"I recommend Clarke and his masonry business without reservations. His crew led by Josh could not have done a better job repointing our (old) all brick house in Bellevue. This was a big job that took ~7 weeks to complete. The cost - given the size of the job - was reasonable and fair, and Clarke was very flexible with scheduling the work; he kept me up to date on the status of the project before the work started and during the job itself with at least weekly calls. I knew at all times where we stood. I would hire Clarke / Phillips Masonry for any other job involving brick work and anything else they do without any doubt."

"I could not be more pleased with the work performed. Frank, Alex and their crew replaced railroad tie retaining walls, removed all schrubs and finished area. They also reshaped the front beds in front of my home and installed river rock. From start to finish, everything was done as explained. Always on time, polite, left no mess. Would not hesitate to hire again."

"Showed up in Bloomfield on time and put our minds at ease regarding a horizontal hairline crack in one of our basement walls. Told us that it wasn't a problem now and how to know if it was becoming a more serious issue. Also examined some support posts to assess if they had moved. Overall we learned a bit more about our basement and house construction, and they did not charge us for the visit because the issue was not serious at this time. Great experience!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

The size of your pizza oven will determine the number of bricks necessary to build it. So the bigger your pizza oven, the more fire bricks you’ll need to purchase. Keep in mind that fire bricks cost about $3 each.

Stone houses used to be much more practical, but with the advent of stronger and cheaper materials like concrete, they aren’t seen as much anymore. There are some parts of the world where it makes sense to build with stone, and they are usually next to a stone quarry. Stone is, however, very weather-resistant, which is why many homes near the sea and on mountains are still built with local stone.

Yes, you can enlarge windows in a brick house. Your masonry contractor will need to cut away exterior brick to make space for the larger window, and you may also need to consult a structural engineer to make sure the window is properly supported inside the frame of the house.

Yes, you can cut patio stones with a circular saw. Similar to using an electric grinder, you will need to use a diamond blade as this is the most effective blade for cutting a material like stone. The stone must be wet when using a circular saw to ensure the cut is smooth.
