"Very well. Gary was very good to deal with. His quote for the job came in over 30% lower than another Angi-recommended contractor. The laborers worked very hard over two days, especially digging out and putting in posts. We didn't deal with them too much but they did a great job and the fencing looks good."

"I hired FJP Services for a (long overdue) yard cleanup fence installation. The contracted price was the best offer I received, the work was done ahead of schedule, and the quality was very high. In short, within the space of two days, the value of my property was significantly enhanced. I recommend this company highly, and will continue to work with them."

"I requested several estimates for a V300 white board fence, 88 feet long and 13 feet high. The quotes were: Great Valley Fence (ACE) at $3,900, Ergeon at $4,500, and Peralta?s Total Services at $6,415.20. Ergeon was very responsive and provided an estimate via Zoom the same day. Peralta and Great Valley Fence both visited my property in person, which I appreciated. I later decided to go with a hunter green V300 fence, but Ergeon didn?t offer that color, and Great Valley Fence quoted nearly double for a different color option. Since Peralta?s estimate was already the highest for white, I didn?t pursue that further. I was leaning toward Great Valley Fence due to their lower price, but I requested a 6- to 12-inch gap from the ground to help clear weeds between the old and new fence. It seems they weren?t able to meet that request and never followed up. Overall, I appreciated the effort from each company and plan to seek new estimates again in spring 2026."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

To effectively keep animals out of your yard with a fence, choose a fence that anchors to the ground to deter digging. Also, consider adding a barrier below the fence to prevent burrowing.

To make your yard less desirable to animals, eliminate food sources like a vegetable garden, and ensure your garbage cans are sealed and tamper-proof. Installing motion-activated devices like lights or sprinklers will startle animal intruders. Also, a fence won’t work well if you forget to keep gates closed and secure. If you still face persistent animal intrusion issues, contact a wildlife control expert who can offer specialized solutions.

The recommended height for a garden fence depends on its primary purpose. For pest control, the necessary height varies by animal. To keep out small pests like rabbits, a fence should be at least two to three feet tall. If you live in an area with deer, you will need a much taller fence, at least five feet high, to prevent them from jumping over. If the main goal is privacy, the fence should be at least seven feet tall. For purely decorative fences, the height is a matter of personal preference.

It is almost always necessary to hire a land surveyor near you to ensure your fence sits on the right side of the property line. Mistaking the shape of your property can lead to fines and costly changes if you have to move or adjust the privacy fence—not to mention some surly looks from your neighbor. We recommend jumpstarting your fence planning in the spring to ensure there is plenty of time to map out your plan before construction season.

For a chain link fence, the ideal distance between fence posts is 6 to 10 feet apart. Measure carefully to ensure even spacing, and resist the temptation to extend the distance more than 10 feet. Doing so could impact the stability of your fence.

Vegetable gardens can easily become a convenient food bank for your local animal population, whether it’s squirrels stealing fruit or rabbits munching on freshly grown veggies. If you want to keep those critters out, it helps to put a fence around your vegetable garden that’s at least a couple of feet tall to deter any animals from getting past it. Just make sure your fence doesn’t interrupt the amount of sunlight your garden needs to thrive.
