Small jobs welcome

"I hired Al to excavate a stormwater management system for my new Pole Barn. He arrived on site on time, prepared with all materials needed to dig a 775 cu ft. trench and install the required corrugated pipe and downspout clean outs, and even worked into the dark with auxiliary lighting to complete the project per township requirements before bad weather set in. I liked that even before I awarded Al the job, he had already stopped by the township zoning office to gain a better understanding of the specifics for my parcel. Although there is still some minor grading work left to do, Al was able to get me through a successful township inspection without issue. Al will be back to add topsoil and cut cleanout pipes to grade level once the ground thaws. I admire that Al frequently asks if your happy with the work throughout the process, as well as explain each step. I plan to bring Al back to finish cutting cleanouts to grade level, and I plan to hire Al to do the final landscaping."

Emergency services offered

"Sal and his polite crew did an excellent professional job excavating our 500gal LP tank and even returned to dump extra load of crushed stone into hole Free Of Charge and regrading top soil and lawn so we didn't have to worry about water collection attracting insects or us falling due to fact our rocky soil required 2 full loads of crushed rocks to make it level. We highly recommend Alternative Petroleum Services and personally refer straight talking Sal, Maria and their construction crew to neighbors and anyone considering excavation or other services they provide. You will be happy, just like us, as finding reliable polite contractors is not easy as we know well after having hundreds come to do work on our home and yard since we had house built in 1998. If you value polite and thorough contractors then Sal and his team are the way to go! ð ð Best - John & Esty Muench ð ð ð ¤"

"Josh at Northwestern was very reliable and installed my block retaining wall and related landscaping including stone top soil plants shrubs resulting in a quality finished product. And the best part is that there was no resulting damage to my driveway and lawn when using the mini-excavator because Josh took the necessary precautions. I am very pleased. I highly recommend Northwestern!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Consultation with the local government helps identify necessary permits, avoid project delays or legal issues, and protect project integrity.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help.

The average cost of excavation is approximately $3,200, with typical projects ranging from $500 to $15,000. Depending on the contractor, you may be charged between $50 and $200 per cubic yard or an hourly rate of $40 to $180 for an excavation specialist. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including the project size, the amount of soil to be removed, and the soil's condition. Hard soil, tree roots, or excessive rocks and clay can increase the price, potentially adding $200 to $1,200 to the final bill. Other factors that can drive up costs include the presence of nearby structures that complicate the work or tight spaces that require manual excavation instead of heavy machinery.

Most residential basements are 8 to 10 feet deep. You can dig deeper depending on building codes, but it does become more difficult. You’ll likely need to install stronger foundation walls and additional supports to handle the increased load. Depending on the water table, you may also need a water management system. Clay soil can support a deeper foundation than sandy soil. A structural engineer will be able to tell you the maximum, feasible depth.

If you’re planning to dig on your property, you’ll need to check for underground utility lines. Call the national call-before-you-dig 811 number. Once connected to an operator, you can schedule a site visit to mark underground lines. This way, you won’t accidentally dig into pipes and can cause major (read: costly) issues.
