"Such a positive experience working with B Young paving. First, they were responsive with their phone calls and answering all of our questions. Seems simple, but it is unbelievable how many companies don’t call you back. Never an issue with B young. Second, they gave us multiple options, and ended up recommending one that was not the most expensive, unlike other companies quotes. They kept in touch and completed the work in one day. We have a decent sized driveway and they did a repair, resurface and seal, all in one day. We are very happy with the result, and the overall experience. Such honest people, and good work."

"We have a horseshoe driveway. Ed and son repaired 5 cracks and resealed the driveway in roughly 5 hours in 94+ degree weather. Did an excellent job and service! Highly recommend."

"Bravo, Richard Cooper! You went above and beyond my expectations! From start to finish, you were punctual, trustworthy, and incredibly fast. My driveway had multiple layers of old asphalt, but you rebuilt it completely from scratch with skill and care. The Belgium block installation is the perfect touch—it transformed the driveway into something truly beautiful. Highly recommend!"

"DiPhillipo's did 2 projects for us - one in front yard and one in back yard. Both jobs turned out great. Tom, the owner, was easy to work with and his crew of workers were very polite, professional and courteous. Would definitely hirer them again."

"We had a concrete driveway removed and asphalt installed by Pennsy Paving. They came on time each day, cleaned everything up. And it was a mess taking old driveway out! Finished when they told us. We love our new driveway!"

"We just moved out of the home where he did landscaping work and to this day, the plants and structures he built are still in tact, plants are healthy and everything was in great condition. Good quality materials installed by a skilled professional! Thank you, Mr. Teter!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

You can expect your asphalt pavement to last anywhere from 20 to 30 years, or 25 years on average. The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway.

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.

During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.

The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

When comparing installation costs, asphalt is often less expensive upfront than concrete. Asphalt prices typically range from $7 to $15 per square foot, while concrete can range from $3 to $18 per square foot. However, long-term costs should also be considered. Concrete driveways generally last longer (up to twice as long) and require less maintenance, which can make them more affordable over their lifespan. While asphalt has a lower installation cost and is easier to repair, it requires more frequent maintenance, such as sealing, which can add up over time. Therefore, while concrete is more expensive initially, its durability may offset the cost in the long run.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.
