The average homeowner does not realize that there are two types of sealant from which to choose, either a high quality petroleum based sealant or a low cost water based sealant called coal tar, a product that will actually cause your driveway to deteriorate. Since your driveway is made of asphalt it makes sense to use a petroleum based sealant that contains asphalt to protect and rejuvenate the surface, which is what we use, a product called LN-11 Equinox. The reason you don't want to put coal tar on it is because it seals the surface of your driveway so solidly that it makes it virtually impossible for the hot summertime heat to escape your driveway’s surface without causing damage. This is a critical issue and here’s why, the only way for the summer heat build up to escape from a coal tarred driveway is by cracking the surface of the coal tar, which by default results in the cracking of your driveway’s surface.
