"We hired Jason for a HUGE project at our house this past September. He went above & beyond & exceeded all of our expectations. Our house was literally overgrown with both mature & young trees & our entire yard was out of control. My husband & I are still talking about the great job he did, & our neighbors are also impressed with his work. He also took down a garage that had partially caved in without any issues. He estimated 2 weeks but did it all in 7! He removed everything for us too including old concrete steps that we have since replaced. Words cannot describe how thrilled we are with his work! Some of the fully grown trees were tight against the house, & he removed them without touching the house. We have a smaller area that we will be addressing in the next 2 years & are already planning to hire Jason. In fact, we hired him again in November to make pads for 2 sheds. He did that in less than a day and it was PERFECT!! We highly recommend Jason Excavating!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

On average, you’re looking at about 12 hours to dig 100 linear feet. Your actual work time will come down to how many twists and turns there are when digging—such as rocky soil, tree roots, obstructions, and whether the ground is frozen.

Concrete blocks are the cheapest way to base a shed. However, the space in between allows critters to go under, burrow, and even damage your shed’s frame. For a more pest-proof option, consider building a shed base with gravel or paver stones. Both options are fairly affordable and easy enough for a DIY project. For gravel, you can build a wooden frame to contain the loose material.

Directional drilling is complex and requires training to use the advanced machinery. It can be challenging to monitor the position of the drill since there’s no direct line of sight. Directional drilling can also be more expensive with a cost of $10 to $30 per linear foot compared to $5 to $12 per linear foot for trenching.

Silt fences should be trenched 8 to 12 inches deep to prevent sediment-filled water from escaping underneath. It also helps to anchor the fence during wet, windy weather. The silt fence fabric often has a red line to indicate the depth for digging. A good contractor will be familiar with the guidelines and regulations.

No, fire blight does not survive free in the soil but instead is carried through insects, animals, rain, or wind during the spring. Keep in mind that it can also spread on tools, which is why you should always disinfect them in between cuts.
