Carpeting has a few benefits on stairs in addition to being a cost-effective floor covering. It absorbs sound, dampening footsteps. It also provides additional traction, which is especially important if you install linoleum floors, epoxy flooring, or any other floor covering that can become slippery if you’re wearing socks. Carpet tiles are less expensive than traditional carpet. The average cost of carpet installation is $1,800, or $3 to $11 per square foot. In comparison, carpet tiles cost $2.50 to $11 apiece and can often be bought in bulk cartons. Since you can more easily DIY carpet tiles, you may be able to save on installation costs, too.

Dry rot or severe water damage may warrant a replacement, but you don’t always need to replace damaged subflooring. If your subfloor has warped because it was installed incorrectly, you can sometimes shim the panels (in other words, add a thin, wedge-shaped piece of wood to level the surface). If your subfloor bows upward, you may be able to sand it down at the joist so it’s level, depending on the extent of the damage.

Impervious or vitreous tile and vinyl flooring work best for the kitchen. These surfaces are non-porous (or have a very low porosity) that can stand up against spills, splashes, and plumbing leaks. Some natural stones are also a good fit, but keep porosity in mind. You may need to seal them to avoid stains and water damage to the subfloor.

Natural options like stone tile, hardwood, cork, bamboo, and natural linoleum are among the healthier flooring choices available. On the flip side, carpet and carpet padding are among the biggest culprits when it comes to releasing potentially hazardous chemicals into your home. Artificial, manufactured options like vinyl and engineered wood may also contain and emit VOCs.
