"I live in a four plex where the roof was replaced. The crew could not have been kinder or more accomodating. I have to walk with a cane & I'm not too mobile some days. They made sure all the pathways were clear of wastes, nails and debris. Even stopping from their lunch break to make sure I was able to walk safely on the side walk. And it was not just one crew person, but all of them were so nice, respectful & curtious. Could not recommend them highly enough!!"

"Absolutely great experience. I was looking to insulate and seal my garage from my bedroom. I have rough cut beams and 2x6 T&G decking that was not a standard distance apart (meaning there was no way to fit fiberglass insulation in at all, and then put in some kind of vapor barrier). Spray foam was the answer. Very professional, worked quickly and efficiently, cleaned up when they were finished, and even locked-up for me when they left (I had to go to work). I would highly recommend them for anything you need done!"

"Choosing IBEX to replace my roof was the right one for me. Working with Kyle, Johnny and their crew has been top notch and very professional from the beginning. I wanted to replace two old skylights and Johnny went out of his way to see that the new ones were exactly what I wanted. Everything from the first bid to the work itself was explained very clearly and in a timely manner. I didn't feel pressured at all! I would recommend IBEX to anybody who's looking for a roofing contractor. They were great!"

"We hired A&E construction and painting to put on a new roof, paint our entire home exterior, and install new gutters. Their bids were significantly lower than all others and they worked with us on our timeline. They were respectful of our budget and didn’t push us to do more than was necessary. We upgraded the vents in our roof for a very reasonable price. The neighbors stopped by frequently to comment on how wonderful it looks! I’m now hiring them for some inside work. I trust them to do quality work at reasonable prices. I highly recommend A&E !!!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. While you could get away with installing a new roof over asphalt or steel, wooden roofs should be removed, new underlayment installed, and the new roof installed over that. Also, the extra weight would add strain to your roof structure.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

No, you can’t use your home’s square footage. You have to calculate your roof’s square footage, and then you may have to convert your square footage measurement to correspond with how the roofing material is measured. For instance, some roofing is sold in “squares,” which equals the total square footage of the roof divided by 100. Shingles are sold in bundles that may not correspond to the number of squares you need. Metal roofing is sold as sheets, so determine the amount of square feet each panel will cover and then divide the total square footage by the coverage area.

Though roof coatings can last up to two decades, it’s a good idea to recoat your roof every four to six years. This is especially important if you have a built-up roof, which is vulnerable to moisture issues. Inspect your built-up roofs annually to make sure they don’t need a new coat.

The best material for your shed roof depends on your budget and personal preferences. For instance, if you’re looking for the most cost-effective option, rolled roofing is your best bet. Just be aware that it only lasts for five to eight years. If you prefer something with a longer life span (and you’re willing to pay for that durability), consider slate shingles, which can last for hundreds of years.
