Neilson Construction is a team of professional builders specializing in custom remodels, additions, and new construction in PDX and surrounding areas.

"We had a great experience with Neilson Construction. Our house had two natural gas fireplaces that needed to be replaced, as well as an entrance floor. For reasons that aren’t really pertinent here, we ended up not only replacing the fireplaces themselves, but remodeling the entire fireplace surrounds. Neilson was the general contractor on the project, coordinating with electricians, fireplace installers, and their own crew of carpenters and tilers. Everybody showed up on time, every time. The communication from Neilson’s home office was top-notch, they cleaned up every evening, and the quality of the work was outstanding. They also stuck to their bid. I’d hire Neilson again in a second!"

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Options include traditional mortgages, construction loans, and personal loans. Consult lenders specializing in modular home financing.

Modular homes are a type of prefab home. Specifically, manufacturers first build modular homes in sections and then deliver them to the job site. The modules, or sections, are usually at least 70% finished before they arrive on your property.

In comparison, prefab homes arrive in panels or segments, and workers assemble them on-site. Generally speaking, modular homes tend to be more durable, and their consistent construction standards may mean you’ll have an easier time getting conventional home loans.

How long it takes to build an in-law suite will vary by type. The time it takes to build an addition will typically be less than for completely new construction. Expect to spend about two months if you convert a basement, attic, or other existing room in your home. New structures can take up to five months, plus up to two months to receive the required permits.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

Building a new home can be more expensive than buying an existing one, depending on the housing market in your area. Many homeowners still find that building a new house is worth the investment as they can choose the exact layout they want, as well as to choose their own floors, wall coverings, appliances, and finishes. If you live close enough to the build site, you can also stop by to check on the builder’s progress, which can provide some peace of mind that the project is worth it.
