"Their work is impeccable and we were very pleased with their process. Very neat. Showed up, worked hard, had a pleasant demeanor, was communicative and they are generations deep in the trade. They went above and beyond. We did our whole home with drywall and plaster. It looks amazing. Will continue to use them on future projects."

"Work was subpar. Drywall tape that was put on to fix a large spot peeled right off after painting. Texturing was horrible. Not on time and did not communicate well. Told me as soon as I painted you would not be able to see the spots he fixed but they show right thru the paint. Nails were popping thru in the ceiling and the texturing is all clumped you and not professional looking."

"Reroof was completed in 2 days, however we were having a skylight changed out at the same time and the skylight they brought was not the correct size. Proper size was ordered. It took a little longer than expected to get the new skylight, but once it came in they came out and installed promptly. We discovered that upon removing and replacing the old skylight when the screws were put in it cracked the drywall. They were a few more days sending someone to repair. All work was completed. I initially had put down a deposit and was not willing to pay the remaining balance until ALL the work was completed, they were very understanding and did not push to collect the remainder until after all the work was completed."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The best way to make long, straight cuts is to use a utility knife and a T-square to score the sheet, snap along the score, and then finish the cut by cutting through the paper on the opposite side with the utility knife. If you’re making small cuts, curved cuts, or cutouts for electrical boxes or light fixtures, you can use a manual jab saw to keep costs down, but an electric spiral saw or oscillating multi-tool will get the cleanest, fastest cuts possible.

There shouldn’t be any gaps between your walls and ceiling. These can be fixed with joint compound but that is only a fix, and it’s much better if your drywall fits correctly in the first place. Sometimes gaps can appear if your foundation shifts significantly but if this is the case, you have a much bigger problem than patching drywall.

Depending on the place where the cutting error occurred, you may be able to fix it. Learning how to patch a hole in drywall is challenging, but if you can tape and mud drywall, you can do it. Having said that, patching is time consuming. Early in the installation process, you may find that it’s easier and far less time consuming to just start over with a new sheet of drywall, cutting a new hole in the right spot. You may be able to use part of the incorrectly cut piece elsewhere, so it’s not completely wasted.

The two most common drywall thicknesses for ceilings are 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch. For most standard residential applications, 1/2-inch drywall is sufficient and widely used. It provides adequate support and is lighter and easier to handle during installation compared to thicker sheets. However, 5/8-inch drywall is often used for specific cases where additional benefits are needed. It is heavier but provides superior sound dampening and fire resistance. You should consider using 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings in commercial buildings, between a garage and a living space, or above a finished basement to meet building codes or for enhanced soundproofing.

In most cases, no, you won’t need a permit to replace drywall. If you’re changing the floorplan of your home by adding or removing walls during the drywall project, then you might need a permit, but replacement or repairs usually doesn’t require a permit. Your drywall professional should be able to confirm whether or not a permit is required for your project. If it is, it’s likely to add between $50 and $150 to your total cost. Keep in mind that you will need permits if you plan to install new electrical wiring or plumbing lines behind your new drywall.
