"I had a great experience with Luna Masonry (Jose did the work; he's also the owner). I called because there was a water leak coming into the ceiling of the 2nd floor of our older house, near the chimney. Jose came out the same day, got on the roof, diagnosed the problem and sent me pics of the area of the leak with a quote (it was reasonably priced). He did a great job. Jose is pleasant and professional, and he's any excellent craftsman. I'd use him again, without hesitation."

Handbuilt masonry fireplaces are likely what comes to mind when we think about curling up by the fire at the end of the day. But bricks in the firebox and chimney tend to be heavy, which is not ideal for homes with weak or damaged foundations.

Prefabricated fireboxes come with a full flue and chimney system, significantly reducing the price and installation time. However, if you need to replace the panels down the line, you are locked into the same model or something very similar.

Sometimes chimney caps blow off during storms or fall off after rusting away. While this typically won’t cause structural damage, failing to replace a chimney cap can. A chimney cap prevents moisture, animals, and debris from entering your chimney, all of which can cause serious problems, such as damage to the masonry or blockages in the flue.

Some of the reasons a chimney damper won't close properly include shoddy installation, age-related damage, or heavy snow or ice affecting a top-sealing type. Poor chimney maintenance and a buildup of rust, debris, or creosote can also cause dampers to jam. Annual inspections and chimney sweep costs are worth it to help you avoid a damper disaster. 

The most common sign of a carbon monoxide leak is the visible black soot marks on the walls near your wood stove. An excess accumulation of smoke in other rooms of your home could also indicate that your wood burning stove is leaking carbon monoxide. If you notice either of these signs or are still unsure, it’s best to leave the premises and contact your fire department to check your home’s levels. 

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. To prepare, stop adding fuel to the fire well before you’re ready to call it a night. If you’re using the fireplace for warmth, you’ll want to cover up in some blankets as the flame dies down.
