"They were not satisfied until my radon levels were pretty much annihilated! Very clean install, came back to measure levels, were still a little higher than expected, so came and dug deeper and put in a different fan and that did the trick! Very reasonable pricing and great communication."

"Professional, friendly and responsive. I hired Alpha to come do a mold inspection on a home I just purchased. They accommodated my schedule and Chris came early morning before work to do the inspection. He was very friendly, thorough, and went above and beyond to make sure he tested everything I was looking for. He eased my mind and he even gave me home advice outside of just the mold inspection. The inspection price was incredibly reasonable and the bid to do some work was as well. He could have tried to oversell me on things due to my lack of knowledge about mold but in the end my house was in good shape and he eased my worries and gave me peace of mind which was well worth the price! I would highly recommend Alpha Environmental!"

"You need to ask the technicians what to do and when regarding the re-test. The information we received was insufficient to know what to do afterwards and our re-test was delayed X 4 days because of lack of communication. Otherwise VERY Happy with the actual work and costs for the work."

"The basement leaked during heavy rainstorms. Even though the leak was small, and basements were flooding all over the city, Q and Amber made time to look at the leak very soon after it happened, and to stay in touch with me as a I monitored the wall to see if it would recur. When it did happen again, Q and his team were very flexible about finding a time to actually make the repair. The repair itself went very quickly. They searched diligently but carefully, taking down small parts of an interior wall, until they found the spot. A continuing wet spring has allowed us to test the fix, and it's been very effective.

Throughout the process, Q and his team were very professional, and very pleasant. They worked with the challenges of our schedule and accommodated requests to keep the price down as much as possible. During the work, they kept the site remarkably clean, despite the demolition and reinstallation of the interior wall. Nobody wants water to leak into their house, but if it should ever happen again, I'd be happy to have this team back!"

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The cost to replace a radon fan ranges from $300 to $600 for the fan itself, with installation adding an additional $200 to $500. Overall, the total cost for replacement can range from $500 to $1,100, depending on factors such as the fan model, home size, and local labor rates. If the fan is part of a larger radon mitigation system, the price may be higher.

No level of radon is technically safe, but since it is present everywhere, complete avoidance is impossible. The average radon level in homes across the United States is 1.3 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking preventative measures if your home's radon levels are between 2 and 4 pCi/L or higher.

Radon is the number one non-smoking cause of lung cancer in the United States, but it can cause some other concerning side effects in the meantime. If you have a raspy voice, chest pains, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, or any of the above, don’t hesitate to perform radon testing and install a mitigation system as soon as possible.

The lifespan of a radon mitigation system depends on the type of system and its maintenance. With proper care, a system can last for many decades. Passive systems tend to last longer as they have fewer components that require replacement. Active systems, which have more moving parts like fans, generally have a shorter lifespan. For instance, water filtration devices and active pressurization systems require more frequent maintenance. While the system as a whole is durable, the radon fan in an active system typically has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years and will need to be replaced. As long as the fan is working, the mitigation system should function correctly.

Keeping radon from getting into your home is much better than having to get rid of it once it's already indoors. While there may not be a way to fully prevent radon from getting into your home, there are things you can do to reduce the gas's ability to enter.

Sealing foundation cracks and openings can help keep the gas from seeping inside. Improving air flow, such as by opening windows, can also be helpful. If you're building your home from scratch, talk to your contractor about using radon-resistant construction to keep the gas out.
