"The company was on time for the estimate and got the estimate the next day. The whole team of workers were neat, clean and groomed each morning. Always polite and answered all questions anytime. They were helpful when an unseen event came up and was asked what I wanted. The job was done in a few days and all the crew worked long and hard..no goofing off. I found the 5 men or so, were polite, respectful, included me on everything, honest and they all were happy and loved their jobs with Homeland Excavation. Very very good hard working, clean Gentle Men and knowledgeable Gentlemen . I would very strongly recommend them. Excellent work and very good quality for the price"

"It's a great experience when a contractor follows through as they commit. Thomas and his crew are professionals and a pleasure to work with. His quote was lower than the others and he did everything as expected. We would hire him again."

Small jobs welcome

"My yard hasn’t looked this good in years! It has been covered in blackberries and another invasive species for the past 4 1/2 years since my husband’s death which was my main concern, but they had gentle suggestions for the rest. My favorite was the incorporating of my collection of large white quartz and granite river rock from the banks of the Rogue River from our many vacations on the coast and the use of my mother’s (an avid gardener) statues which they put to good use. (Didn’t realize I had so many of the latter!). They unburied some of the plants I had forgotten about, readjusted climbers, saved my roses, daylilies, a rhodie I thought was dead, and a lilac I thought some previous worker had killed, put weed fabric over every space before replanting the few plants I bought, showed me how to replant with new plants. I’ve had neighbors comment on my “new” front yard and friends on my back yard. And I really enjoyed them!"

"Daniel was awesome to work with. He came out and provided a solid estimate in a timely fashion. We had an unexpected sprinkler line that was in the middle of our excavation area and he took care of that. He also provided the materials for a retaining wall that we hadn't initially planned for, and he added that to the project scope without issue. I will definitely reach out to Daniel if we have another project like this one."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, most services include site leveling and foundation work. Confirm with your contractor for specifics.

Dumpsters work best on hard, study, and level surfaces made of asphalt, stone, or concrete. If the surface is uneven or too soft, the dumpster could get stuck or tip over when filled. Keep in mind that you must obtain a dumpster permit to keep it on a city street in many areas.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

You can dig 60 to 80 linear feet by hand per day depending on the depth. Digging a 100-foot trench by hand will take you two work days, but it can take longer if you have heavy or rocky soil. If you’re digging a deep trench or one that’s over 100 feet, consider renting a mechanical trencher, such as a walk-behind or ride-on, or calling a pro for help.
