"The company was on time for the estimate and got the estimate the next day. The whole team of workers were neat, clean and groomed each morning. Always polite and answered all questions anytime. They were helpful when an unseen event came up and was asked what I wanted. The job was done in a few days and all the crew worked long and hard..no goofing off. I found the 5 men or so, were polite, respectful, included me on everything, honest and they all were happy and loved their jobs with Homeland Excavation. Very very good hard working, clean Gentle Men and knowledgeable Gentlemen . I would very strongly recommend them. Excellent work and very good quality for the price"

"Replacement 830 sq ft driveway for $9400 J. A. Holland construction gave me a new amazing, perfect, flawless driveway of 830sqft for $9400. This included a drainage system under the driveway from gutter downspouts detouring water away from the driveway, a light grey tint added to the concrete, demo removing the old driveway, correcting a slope, inspections, the concrete and a finish with a brushed texture. Reasons why I chose this company out of 6 bidders: 1. By checking CCB license through Oregon Construction Contractors Board using google. Thomas Holland, owner, has had the same license, unblemished, for over 10 years. Some of the others had their license for less than a year or had consumer complaints, problems attached to their license. 2. Thomas has an eye for potential problems and was the only one to suggest a drainage system under the driveway to collect water from the gutter of this old home. 3. Thomas does the work along with his crew, very important to me as I have had bad experiences with the contractor who has multiple jobs, sends a crew unsupervised. Example: One plumber decided he was not going to do a section of plumbing, signed off the job and had I not been there reporting him, that section of plumbing I paid for would have not been done. 4. I found over 10 great 'real' reviews on J.A. Holland Construction. could find no reviews or very little on the other bidders. 5. First impression of Thomas is an all around 'good' guy, straight forward, no phony sales pitch. 6. The price. Thomas came in low, tied exactly with another low bid, and this great price with the under driveway drainage system. The job: Demo: Took only 2 days and what a performance as neighbors also watched in awe, the street lined with heavy machinery in order of use and so organized as as the old concrete was lifted, put in the vehicle to be disposed of, gravel was put in place. Thomas is a master of heavy vehicle machinery, used a generous amount of gravel and had the job cleaned up by 5pm both days. 2. Forms installed, passed inspection. 3. The concrete pour was just as smooth and also passed inspection without incident. On one walkway I had done by another company, very little gravel was used and I noticed later a slight yellowish tan stain had appeared, found none of this with the work from Thomas, and believe it is because of the generous layer of gravel. In fact, I can not find one irregularity in the concrete."

Small jobs welcome

"My yard hasn’t looked this good in years! It has been covered in blackberries and another invasive species for the past 4 1/2 years since my husband’s death which was my main concern, but they had gentle suggestions for the rest. My favorite was the incorporating of my collection of large white quartz and granite river rock from the banks of the Rogue River from our many vacations on the coast and the use of my mother’s (an avid gardener) statues which they put to good use. (Didn’t realize I had so many of the latter!). They unburied some of the plants I had forgotten about, readjusted climbers, saved my roses, daylilies, a rhodie I thought was dead, and a lilac I thought some previous worker had killed, put weed fabric over every space before replanting the few plants I bought, showed me how to replant with new plants. I’ve had neighbors comment on my “new” front yard and friends on my back yard. And I really enjoyed them!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

A perc test can take anywhere from one to eight hours to complete. The total time depends on factors like the amount of excavation required, the depth and width of the holes, and whether multiple test holes are needed. For a single hole, the process of filling it with water and monitoring the drainage rate usually takes less than an hour. Professionals can often complete the entire test in a single day. While it's possible to get results the same day, some companies may take a few days to provide the official report.

Slab foundations are more affordable than crawl spaces because they require minimal excavation, as the slab sits directly on the ground or on footers that only sink a few feet into the ground. Crawl spaces require excavation of the entire footprint of the home to several feet below the surface. Not only does that mean higher labor costs, but more materials are necessary for the concrete foundation walls.

Directional drilling is complex and requires training to use the advanced machinery. It can be challenging to monitor the position of the drill since there’s no direct line of sight. Directional drilling can also be more expensive with a cost of $10 to $30 per linear foot compared to $5 to $12 per linear foot for trenching.

If you don’t wish to dig it out and convert it into a finished basement, you can still encapsulate your crawl space to protect it from damage for an average cost of $5,500. Finishing a crawl space beyond this isn’t really worthwhile, as the low ceilings mean you won’t be able to use the area as living space.

Underground downspouts refer to the sections of downspout extensions that lead away from your home and gutter system. While they cost more than traditional extensions, they can provide several benefits, such as less frequent damage and no need to move them for lawn care tasks. Whether they're worth it or not depends on your budget at installation time and how much convenience they'll add to your situation.
