"He does everything! He has put up a new fence with steel posts, he has painted, put in new woodwork, helped moved things into storage, fixed the leaking shower, and landscaping. There is lots of things he is capable of doing and he is even licensed for pesticide treatment too in case I need that done too. He can figure anything out! He is very innovative!"

"Sanko Construction does things right. They show up when they say they will. They explain exactly what they are doing and what it will take to get the project done including the costs involved with both materials and labor. In my experience, the bill has never been higher than originally quoted. The work has been outstanding! It is the no nonsense approach and quality work that impresses me the most. I will be hiring them for future projects and am more than happy to recommend Sanko Construction to others."

"The project took longer than both of us expected but the quality of work and detail are work it. He put the items I had stored behind the garage back inside and even hung my bike on the wall. All my yard tools were hung up too and the floor washed when we did the final walk through"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.
