"The septic tank was pumped satisfactorily. The problem we had was that our gate and latching mechanism were damage by his employee doing the work. We were told that the gate was damaged. We called Mr Andrews after we discovered that gate was damaged. Mr Andrews told me that his employees were independent contractors and were responsible for any damages that occur. Mr Andrews asked me to send him pictures and a description of the damage. He said he would have his independent contractor contact me to resolve the issue. To date we have not heard from his independent contractor or Mr Andrews to resolve the issue The company does a good pumping your septic tank but doesn't take care of any damages that they cause. "I called them at the end of the day for an emergency service. They were there well before the time frame I was given with the cleanest septic truck I have ever seen. They were very polite and explained what they were doing and made suggestions. I was very thankful they were able to conduct same evening service."

"This would have gone pretty well except that when John (son of Henry) came to look at the job he told me that they would save and replant the bushes and plants that would have be removed to make their initial hole at the curbside city water connection (about 2'x 6' on surface). This was necessary to allow their underground-pipe installer to reach the depth required. When it came to "replacing" the plants, all they did was dig some holes in what was now a clay surface, pick up the plants with what topsoil balls remained around their roots and put them in the holes, doing little else to properly replant them. I have had to get my landscaper out to finish the job. They did do a very nice job of connecting the new copper water line to the house waterline in the basement and cleaned up well. City inspector checked both ends and was satisfied. Bottom line: if this installation had not had to start in our street-side garden, but maybe just in our lawn, I would have been happier with the results."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Most well pump pressure switches have a factory setting of 30 to 50 PSI. There’s some flexibility with this if you’d like a lower or higher water pressure, but remember that it should sit 2 to 3 PSI above your well tank’s general pressure setting.

The inside of your pressure switch cover will usually indicate minimum and maximum settings—going below and above the numbers might damage your well pump.

To keep your septic tank healthy, be careful of what you flush and be conservative with water usage, as even flushing too much water down the drain can throw off the septic system’s delicate balance. Never flush anything but human waste and toilet paper down your toilet, and be sure to have the tank inspected and pumped every two to five years, depending on the size of your household and your water usage.

While abandoning a tank without treating it and following strict rules is illegal, there are several other ways to dispose of an old septic tank. One standard method is to pump out and crush the tank where it rests and bury it in the soil. Another is to remove it and transport it to a landfill. Finally, if abandonment is the best option, your contractor must pump out the tank and fill it with inert material, such as sand or concrete, depending on local regulations.

Several things can ruin a septic tank over time, including dumping harsh chemicals (like bleach and ammonia), pesticides, and paint thinners down your drain because they can kill the bacteria in your septic tank. You should also make sure to only flush waste and toilet paper in your toilet—otherwise, you could clog your system.

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.
