"Gavin is an excellent and reliable electrician. He does a thorough job, ensuring every problem that pops up is fixed before it’s done. Our house was built in the 60s so the old panel was extremely outdated. Gavin installed a new one with plenty of room for new breakers. I didn’t know I could be this excited about an electrical panel! I would recommend Mosby Electric for any job you have."

"One of the only companies to call me back. Not the best price, but reasonable for the job done. A year ago I added a white marble backsplash in my kitchen. I had updated the electrical in 2005 with a remodel, but we installed beige/almond devices to match the rest of the house. Because the new backsplash is white marble, I wanted white devices to match. I had 23 total outlets/switches, including some GFIC outlets to be changed. Job was supposed to take 3 hours, and I believe he finished a little early. Service technician was polite, clean, thorough and on-time. He covered my new counters with a canvas tarp to protect them and he cleaned each area with a small shop vac as he finished. He did a wonderful job, I'm very pleased. I did supply the devices. I purchased them on my own to make sure I got what I wanted. He even replaced a few cover plates to match the others I already had. Seems I had missed a few in my original sweep after the backsplash was installed. AND, even though the original appointment was on 7/3, he couldn't do the job and would have to come back. He returned the following day, 7/4, even though it was 4th of July, and let me know that they work 24/7 with no extra charge for evenings or weekends. I would highly recommend this company if you need an electrician. I will hire them again if the need arises."

"Lightning Electric was excellent! I needed a circuit added to my garage for an EV charger. I also needed a sub-panel added so that I could add more circuits to my house as needed. Sarge and Abdul were meticulous in their work. They cleaned up after themselves. The new circuit and the sub-panel are working great so far. They had to overcome a couple of issues. First, the circuit had to be run from the NW part of my basement to the SE corner in the garage. No easy task with a finished basement. They did a great job figuring out how to do that with minimal cutting of the drywall (only drywall in the garage needed to have a couple of small holes. Nothing in the finished basement. Second, I noticed that the outlet box was installed too low so the EV charger might hit the door of the car when I opened it. Sarge quickly moved the outlet box up so that it was no longer an issue. Overall, I was very impressed with their professionalism. It was a great experience! I would hire them again for future electrical needs."

"Mike Powers responded to my query within seconds. I hadn't even had a chance to create my Angi password yet. Unlike other contractors, he gave me a quote within a week. (One contractor came out twice, then never gave me a quote or answered my follow-up emails. Guess he didn't want my business.) The biggest delay was obtaining the generator I wanted, a Kohler instead of a Generac. But everything was great on Mike's end. His electrical crew was thorough and efficient, as were the sub-contracted plumbers. Now, I just hope I have no need to use it, although I am confident it will work."

"This is the 2nd time I have used Safe Electric and both times I have used them have been great experiences. I had 3 new fixtures installed plus a new circuit run to be used for a new freezer in our finished basement. Jon & Eric were the two electricians that were sent to my home. They worked efficiently and quickly, but did outstanding work. Even though our basement had a finished ceiling, they were able to run a wire through with minimal disruption to the finished ceiling. I had concerns about the alignment of the lights on the fixture (this was a manufacturing defect and nothing to do with their installation) and they obliged me by improving the light alignment. They also cleaned up after they were completed and disposed of the old light fixtures and packaging materials for the new fixtures. Their work was excellent. The only negative aspect was the price which seemed very high to me. The cost for installation of the 3 light fixtures was $462 and the new circuit was $903."

"I estimate I have just under $100k in electronics and appliances in my house. We have significant lightning storms in my location. To NOT have lightning suppression installed is significant risk in my mind based on my location in New Jersey. RS LIGHTNING PROTECTION was responsive with a quick cost estimate and a reasonable price based on my research for installation. By the way...installation is part art, such as bends in cable are not more than 90 degrees. It's not just about running grounded cables. This installation in conjunction with surge protection on my electrical panel performed by my electrician and cable protection gives me significant piece of mind that all my appliances and electronics are protected from lightning and any potential surge generated by a near strike. Mr Richard Sherlock knows his subject. Highly recommended. Five stars."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

Most homeowners won't be able to claim a home generator as a tax write-off. However, a whole-house generator may be tax-deductible in certain situations depending on its purpose. For instance, if it's needed to power essential medical equipment, it may qualify as a medical expense deduction. Also, in some cases, businesses can deduct a generator as a business expense if it supports operations. Always consult a tax professional to determine eligibility based on your specific circumstances and the applicable IRS regulations.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.
