"Use DEFENDER GLASS BLOCK, you will not be disappointed in any way! SPECIFIC FACTORS WHY: 1. Answers and returns calls/text right away. 2. Owners Zach – dark haired and Luke – wearing hat (pictures attached) extremely professional, great personalities and honest business practices. 3. Very reasonably priced. 4. Measure and installation within days. 5. No extra work, unless discussed with customer prior. 6. Leave work area clean and installation took about an hour for two windows. When I called Zach (pictures included) answered on the second ring. Was out the same day to measure, and by Saturday, Zach and Luke had two glass block basement windows installed. We will use DEFENDER GLASS BLOCK for all our glass block needs. Highly Recommended!"

"Queen City Glass block replaced our two pane glass basement windows with vented glass block windows. Every interaction during installation was warm and professional. The basement is now more secure, and will have cross ventilation.

"We had new windows installed last week and we are very impressed with the overall quality and experience we had working with Matt and the team over at Zen Windows! The install team was on time and very professional. Don’t fall for the High sell pitches that the other companies use. Give Zen windows a call!"

"I am a little late on reviewing the work J&M Construction did for me back in November of 2013 but that is on purpose.  We had 20 windows and the wood siding on the front of our 90 year old house replaced. I wanted to wait some time to ensure the windows and siding had no issues before I posted a review.  This winter could not have been a better test.
James, the owner, personally did the estimate for the work and arrived on time and provided a detail in-house demonstration on window options. He had great suggestions for matching quality window while keeping the appropriate  appearance for my tudor home.  Being an old home the windows were not square. In fact one window he measured was off by more than 2 inches and he thought it might not be possible to put a working window in the space. He and his team worked hard to not only make it look great but the window was able to open and close smoothly. Everything from start to finish could not have gone better. His team arrived on time and always cleaned up at the end of the day.  We had one small issue when some trim work ordered for the windows was the wrong size. He had to reorder the trim. Instead of calling me on the phone about the issue he drove 40+ miles to tell me personally  and ensure the right trim would be available the next day. Not something you see in a contractor these days. More importantly the work they did was of the highest quality.  All 20 windows have no issues and have been perfect for this extremely cold winter we are experiencing. The siding is a perfect match to the rest of the house. J&M may not be the cheapest estimate you get but you will get more than money’s worth from James and his team.  You owe to yourself to at least talk to J&M before your next project.

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.

Yes, professionals can install decorative or colored glass block patterns for a unique look.

Glass block mortar is the best choice for glass block window units. It is specifically formulated for glass block window installation. Glass block mortar is usually a mixture of Portland cement, sand, and special chemicals. It is a white mortar that is applicable inside and outside your home. Do not use regular tile mortar because it may not have the binding strength and flexibility required for glass block windows.
