"I have a rental property in Heath, Ohio. I received a bill for $1500.00 for dug up and two risers and fittings, one at the house and one at the meter. This was all the description they gave for the amount they charged. I was told it was for the gas line. The Rice company DID NOT check the ownership of the home they were excavating. I think when the renter received the bill she contacted me. After trying to get the Rice Company to return my calls Mr. Rice finally did. I was not informed they were doing this work. He said the renter had presented herself as the owner and he started the work. The Rice Company didn't check the deed for ownership. Due to my age and the Covid restrictions I haven't seen the property until January this year. And found a dug-out hole with a large pool on my property which I NEVER ok'd."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

Yes, many services include camera inspections to identify the cause of the blockage. Confirm with your provider.

Thankfully, it’s pretty rare to find a rat in your toilet. It’s more likely in larger cities with big sewer systems that can be feeding grounds for rats, but even then, you still shouldn’t fret.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about rats coming up through the sewers,” Bradshaw says. “I’d say only one out of a thousand rodent customers we get actually have this problem. And of the 20 or some customers that have had this happen, they’ve all only had just one rat come up this way.”

The best practice is to hydro jet your sewer line once per year. However, there are several factors that can affect this recommendation, including the age and condition of your pipes, how often your sewer line is used, and the type of waste disposed of in the system. When in doubt, ask a licensed plumber for their recommendation for your plumbing system.

When hiring a sewer line company, you need to consider more than just the quoted price. Make sure to check that the company or contractor is licensed, certified, and insured to protect you both. Check for positive reviews, and you can even request references for extra peace of mind.

To find the best contractor, you might also want to consider how long the company has been in business doing sewer line cleaning and if they’ve won any industry awards for their work and service. Review potential contracts closely, and look for transparent pricing.
