"The septic tank was pumped satisfactorily. The problem we had was that our gate and latching mechanism were damage by his employee doing the work. We were told that the gate was damaged. We called Mr Andrews after we discovered that gate was damaged. Mr Andrews told me that his employees were independent contractors and were responsible for any damages that occur. Mr Andrews asked me to send him pictures and a description of the damage. He said he would have his independent contractor contact me to resolve the issue. To date we have not heard from his independent contractor or Mr Andrews to resolve the issue The company does a good pumping your septic tank but doesn't take care of any damages that they cause. "During Freeze-agaddon 2014, Greg was the only one able to guarantee that someone would be out today, and the two guys he sent out were fantastic - easy to work with, very detailed and specific about what they were doing and why, and fixed a major problem thoroughly and quickly. Waking up to a pool of water in the basement due to burst pipes is anything but ideal, but Plumb Tech Services turned a Full On Crisis into a Problem Solved quickly and effectively. They also spent time after the fix going over various ways to prevent it from happening again. Very helpful and informative. If I ever have a plumbing problem of any kind, I will definitely be using them again (though hopefully I won't need to!).

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

Your drain field or leach field should be 1 to 3 feet under the ground. It will be a little shallower than the septic tank, although it can be the same depth or slightly deeper. The proper depth of the septic tank is up to 4 feet. It’s possible that your local regulatory agency requires a certain depth for your drain field.

Since vinegar is a weak acid with a pH of two to three, it’s generally safe for septic systems. It won’t eat away at the good bacteria in your septic tank and can help break down the sludge, which is its bottom layer. However, like with everything in life, moderation is key.

If you aren’t sure if you have a septic tank or a cesspit, you can check your property records or inspect your drainage system. A septic tank has an outlet pipe that allows liquid to drain into a soakaway or drain field, while a cesspit is a sealed tank that requires frequent emptying. If you notice a manhole cover and no nearby drainage field, it’s likely a cesspit. Signs like slow drainage or a frequent need for pumping can also provide clues. A professional inspection is the easiest way to confirm if your home runs on a septic tank or cesspit.

Pump the tank every 3-5 years, avoid flushing non-degradable items, and address leaks promptly to extend system life.
