"After receiving multiple quotes and consultations, we were very impressed with Sky Contracting’s response to our inquiry. We received the quote quickly and despite needing a new infrastructure and unanticipated repairs of rotting wood, the quote remained extremely competitive. Even when I requested unconventional deck changes, Mechele really “heard” my concerns and desires. We had purchased a complicated metal gazebo which, despite being unfamiliar with, they put up after the deck was finished. Mechele personally checked in on a daily basis to make sure that I was satisfied and understood what was going on, which really meant a lot to me. The supervising manager, Tony, and his team were professional and reliable, arriving and leaving at the same time each day. I really appreciated that once they started my project, they continued until it was complete despite the unforeseen but necessary extensions—this speaks highly to their integrity and made me feel just as important as clients with larger jobs. For a “simple” deck replacement this turned into a complicated process requiring extensive professional building expertise, which Sky Contracting provided each step of the way. With every unexpected hiccup in the building process, Mechele, Tony, and the team remained unfazed and solution-oriented. Overall, besides the finished product being above my expectations, I was most impressed by the communication and ongoing customer service provided by Mechele and Tony. I will certainly be using them for future projects, large and small!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

For maximum stability, install grab bars on wall studs, as this will adequately support the weight. However, if you don't have access to studs, you can get by with wall anchors. If opting for the latter, choose specialty hollow wall anchors.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

The cost to frame a 2,000-square-foot house can fall anywhere between $14,000 and $32,000. This price can increase or decrease depending on what type of framing you choose, the quality of the materials, the project's complexity, and whether you decide to hire a professional to do the job.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
