"Luigi and his team did an incredible job replacing my front steps and all the concrete/masonry around the front of my home. It was easy to communicate with Luigi in order to figure out exactly what we wanted, and the execution of everything was flawless. I highly recommend Luigi for any brick masonry you'd need done on your home."

"We hired Starkie Landscaping Design to create a patio space for a hot tub. Mr. Starkie created an amazing area that exceeding our expectations. He is hands on throughout the entire process and his level of communication is excellent. The crew that completed the job was outstanding. These men are hard workers, meticulous and always made sure all areas were clean before they left for the day. As we are new homeowners, Mr. Starkie was able to provide us with recommendations for other specialists that were needed after the job such as irrigation and electric. Even after the project was completed, Mr. Starkie came back to check in on our plants as we were nervous about the heat wave. He truly cares about his customers and takes pride in his work. I would highly recommend Starkie Brothers to any of my family and friends."

Customers say: Terrific value

"We had a great experience using Wilfredo to construct a stone patio in our backyard. As others have said, he really aims to please and he does a great job. He comes when he says he will come and does what he says he will do. He even fixed up the work of a prior mason while he was here, free of charge. He is a very nice guy, as are his son and other co-worker. Also, his price was much more reasonable because he was doing the work himself. I highly recommend."

"The entire project took one week. The driveway was completed in two days and the masonry steps in three. The entire project went well with Ravinder's workers cleaning up after themselves each evening. The workers appear to take pride in their work which showed in the product produced. Ravinder is a good manager who was mostly onsite and on top of things. My sole gripe is Ravinder could have done a better job in reassuring my concerns regarding cement in cold weather that I found on the internet."

"Excellent work, very fast and Tony was quick to respond to any questions I had. I had my old driveway removed and had them expand using asphalt, with a nice Belgian block border. They also removed an old walkway for me at no extra cost. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for masonry work."

"Our driveway came out beautifully! People are complimenting the job left and right. JG landscaping was wonderful to work with. They were prompt, honest, and explained everything along the way. I would upload pictures but it won’t let me attach to the review. I hired them to do more landscaping and would highly recommend!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick can increase the value of your home depending on the type of masonry materials used. Homes generally have a higher resale value when they have brick siding, and brick is also easier to maintain (and lasts longer) than other types of siding, which can motivate buyers to make an offer.

Just keep in mind, however, that although brick can up the asking price when you sell your house, the cost to brick a house is also more expensive than other typical siding costs—so you’ll invest more in the project.

Mortar and thinset both serve the same purpose—tile adhesion—but have different compositions and use-cases. Thinset is heatproof and presents a wide range of possibilities due to the added polymers. Mortar is typically used for bonding stones and brick. Thinset is rarely used outside, while mortar is rarely used inside.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.

You can turn a red brick white through a process called whitewashing. Whitewash isn’t a stain but rather is made from water and white latex paint. Adding more water to the mix will make the solution look lighter when applied, and adding more paint will make it look more white.

Not all cracks in brick indicate foundation problems. For instance, small hairline cracks can occur as a new construction settles. However, larger cracks are often a sign of a more severe issue. Indicators of a potential foundation problem include long horizontal cracks, "stair-step" cracks, vertical cracks that appear indoors, or any crack that widens at the top. Other signs of structural damage to look for are uneven floors and doors or windows that stick. These issues could be caused by problems with the soil beneath the home or an overgrown tree.
