Bill and Jennifer handled all the permits and paperwork, which saved me a lot of time and hassle. The work was completed in a timely, efficient, and professional manner, and the crew left everything clean when they were done. "I was selling my house in NY and had an underground oil tank that needed to be abandoned properly prior to closing. I hired Optima Environmental to perform the job. The sales rep came out that day and walked down and discussed with me what needed to be done. I was in the process of moving when she came back and I signed the paperwork. I was then informed that a CO had never been obtained for the new oil tank which had been installed 3 years earlier. Working with the Optima Representative (Shelley) and the town, I was able to get the permit's needed and following the job (which was performed in one day, while I had already moved to my new residence in LA) and the inspection by the town I was able to get the CO's required for my closing. All the people I met and dealt with from Optima Environmental were very professional, helpful and courteous. The final project turned out great!!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.

If you have a broken sprinkler pipe underground, there will be some signs you can easily spot to locate it and take action. These include leaks, water spouts, flooding, consistently damp areas on your lawn, low water pressure, and grass around the sprinkler head that’s taller and darker than anywhere else in the yard.

If there are no obvious signs of a broken pipe, you can use tools such as water leak mics, leak noise loggers, audio devices that record leaks, and acoustic testing links.

Broken pipes can lead to uneven watering, plant damage, and higher utility bills. The longer you wait to fix them the more the repair cost may be.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

A mini excavator can dig between 5 and 11 feet deep, depending on the type and size of the mini excavator. Mini hydraulic excavators are more powerful and can reach deeper into the earth, but electric models have a more limited range. Mini excavators over two tons in size are also more powerful and able to dig as deep as 11 feet.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.
