"Zachary and his crew were professional, informative, worked quickly, and did a great job extending the pavement of our existing paved driveway to meet our new, detached garage. They returned later to seal/coat the entire driveway and were done quickly with no overspray anywhere. The price was right. The work performed exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend Muddy Driveways & Paving."

"We have a VERY long driveway and it has been gravel (barely) for the decade or so that we've owned the house. Started getting quotes for paving it, and was shocked that they were coming in at $3 per square foot (as a previous reviewer noted). From research, I knew it should be $2/sf, so we kept looking. Saw a beautiful newly-paved driveway nearby. That homeowner put us in touch with Rich Stanley, the third generation owner of this paving company. Rich came in at the right price and with a great can-do attitude. Took almost two full days to complete, but it is a work of great beauty. Smooth, wide, level -- our drive now looks like a gorgeous country lane. It was worth the wait to find the right company.
Another reviewer was unhappy that Rich did not honor the 5% advertised discount. 5% of our bill would have been a lot of money, and since he was already giving us such a fair deal I didn't request that. What I did request was a couple of extras... a rounded turnaround instead of square.. a special "parking pad" for the trash cans... and another slight turnaround area to the side. Rich and crew happily accommodated.  A+ service.  Can't recommend them highly enough.

"I could not be more pleased with Wells Asphalt. They were professional, easy to work with, communicated well and did the work for a fair price. Truly a family business with 4 family members involved one way or another with the project. I would hire them back without reservation."

"After three power failures over the past 18 months, each of which lasted several days (power outage from Sandy lasted 9 days), I decided to install a standby generator. By the time the town got around to issuing the necessary permits, it was January, the temperature had been near zero for several days, and the ground was frozen solid. Most contractors would have said nothing could be done until the spring when the ground had thawed. Not Elmir. He knew exactly what to do and how to do it. He and his men dug a two foot deep and 100 foot long trench for the power line from the site of the generator to the house and a second 50 foot long trench for a propane line from an existing buried tank to the generator. To get the power line to the house it was necessary to dig the trench across a gravel driveway. Emir dug the trench across the drive, laid the PVC piping for the electric line, and back filled by the end of the day so that my wife and I were able to get our cars in and out with only a minimum of inconvenience. Because of the cold weather and subsequent snow storms he was unable to properly finish off the grading on the rest of the trenching but will be back in the spring to do it. Of this I have no doubt. I highly recommend him"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The cost to replace a driveway ranges from $8 to $15 per square foot, depending on factors that include material, size, and labor. If your driveway has deep cracks, potholes, or drainage issues (or if it’s simply past its prime), replacement might be the smarter investment over constant repairs. Resurfacing can be a cheaper alternative at $3 to $20 per square foot, but it won’t fix your driveway’s underlying problems.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.

If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.
