Acrylic tubs can fade or turn yellow over time due to thick layers of accumulated dirt, hard water deposits from minerals, and shampoo or soap dyes. Also, as an acrylic tub ages, it may become dull or change color due to changes in the acrylic itself.

An alcove tub fits in an alcove in your bathroom, against three walls. Drop-in tubs, on the other hand, are dropped into an enclosure or frame. You can put this frame anywhere in a bathroom as long as it fits. Since the frame is custom-built, drop-in tubs come in more design options and a wider range of materials.

Alcove tubs come in fiberglass, acrylic, or enameled steel. Fiberglass is the most affordable but least durable, while acrylic is the highest-end and most durable (as long as you don’t go with a poor grade of acrylic, which will be prone to scratches). Enameled steel, where a steel tub is coated in a layer of porcelain, is a wallet-friendly middle ground. This material is highly durable but prone to chips.

If you want to convert a tub to a walk-in shower, expect this project to take anywhere from one to three days. It takes less time to remove a standard tub and install a standard-sized prefabricated shower. Your project will take longer if you’re installing new plumbing and tiling. Certain custom tiling designs can take three or four days if they’re elaborate.
