The magnetron is one of the most common components to fail first in a microwave. When the magnetron fails, the microwave can no longer heat food. Other frequently failing parts include the door switch, which prevents the microwave from operating if the door is not securely closed, the light bulb, and control panel buttons that may stop responding over time.

Many homeowners prefer gas stoves for their ability to cook food much faster than an electric model. They also allow you to easily adjust and fine-tune cooking temperatures on the fly, whereas electric cooktops take a while to heat or cool. Plus, if the power goes out, you’ll still be able to use your stove to cook a meal.

Whether or not it’s safe to use a buzzing microwave depends on what’s causing the noise. If a loose fastener or a dirty cooling fan is the underlying issue, it’s safe to use your microwave, although you may do damage to the fan motor if you don’t clean the blades first. If the issue is stemming from something else, you could do further damage to your appliance and potentially even start a house fire if you don’t repair it before continued use. If the microwave is buzzing when not in use, shut the power and call an emergency electrician, as this could lead to a fire.

If you burn popcorn or other food items in the microwave, the smell lingers for an uncomfortably long time. To get the burnt smell out of your microwave, remove any leftover burnt food debris and then heat 1 cup of water in a microwave-safe container for about three minutes. Next, clean the inside of the microwave with a soft microfiber cloth, water, and a small amount of dish soap. Dry and let the microwave air out for two to three hours.

In most cases, the repair is worth the value as it should help maintain the life of the appliance for a longer period, and the repair should be a lower cost than replacing the entire unit. For example, if the cost to repair your refrigerator will be more than 50% of the cost to buy a new one, and it’s 10 years old or more, then it may not be worth repairing.
