"I found Serg & My Town Handyman after doing a handyman search on Angie's List.com. It turns out he is so much more than just a handyman.

A few months earlier a pipe burst behind a wall in my finished basement due to the extreme cold temps. The water had been flowing for hours by the time I came home to shut off the main water valve. The walls & carpeting were ruined.  The next morning the plumber cut into the walls & ceiling to correct the broken pipe.

I called My Town Handyman, LLC after reading positive reviews. Serg called me back at 7:45pm and said he was finishing a job in my area & he could be at my home by 9:00pm that same evening. THAT was a pleasant surprise & I took him up on the offer.

Serg reviewed the damaged & quoted the job on the spot.  Serg said it would be a 3-day job. We set the start date for the job. All I had to do was select my paint colors & tell Serg on the start date. Serg & his guys Nick & Alex showed up on time & got to work immediately.  The 1st thing they did was put up a plastic barrier to keep sheet rock dust from flying into the other rooms. I was impressed that they worked on my basement through the entire day.  They worked from 9:00am to 6:30pm each day as quoted. All three of the guys were completely self-sufficient. They knew exactly what to do. They had a plan of action & stuck to it. No one had to come to me with questions.

Before they left after each day's work, they cleaned up & organized their equipment so my basement was still usable.

My Town Handyman replaced insulation & sheet rock walls, replaced all of the molding & painted the entire room in the colors I selected.

Serg also added an access panel in my ceiling enabling me to easily turn off the water for that room only in case of another broken pipe. The access panel is spring loaded and blends in with the ceiling so well that you don't even notice it.

Serg & his guys did a perfect job. I am so happy with their work. They finished the job within the time frame promised and within budget.

My basement is beautiful. I will definitely use Serg & My Town Handyman, LLC again & I highly recommend them to you."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

Installing new insulation in a home is worthwhile if your existing insulation is old and has lost some of its insulative capability or if you don’t have insulation installed already. Installing new insulation will boost your home’s energy efficiency, which can reduce your heating and cooling bills and save money on HVAC repair and maintenance in the long run. New insulation also keeps your living space more comfortable, so you and your family will benefit from the work as well. Finally, installing new insulation boosts your home value, making it especially worthwhile if you plan to sell.

Fiberglass is the best insulation for HVAC ducting because it's inexpensive, widely available, versatile, and long-lasting. Fiberglass also offers acoustic insulation in addition to thermal insulation, which can contribute to a more peaceful home environment. You can use other materials like mineral wool, but fiberglass is the industry standard.

Yes, you can install insulation behind drywall yourself, but only if your walls are not finished. If your studs are exposed, installing fiberglass insulation in roll or batt form is very straightforward and just requires a few tools and some safety equipment. If your walls are already finished and you’re looking to add insulation, it’s better to hire a professional, as you’ll likely need blown-in insulation, which can be dangerous to work with and a challenge to get into the proper areas in your wall voids.

For a DIY solution to protect an outdoor faucet from freezing, you can craft a cover using spare rags, a durable plastic bag, and duct tape. However, be aware that this method may not be as effective as a store-bought cover. Fabric like rags or old towels can absorb water, which could freeze and cause problems. While a DIY cover can work as a temporary stopgap, a proper outdoor faucet cover is inexpensive (often $5 or less), easy to install, and readily available, making it the recommended long-term solution.
