"My wife and I decided to move from our house built in the 90â s and move into a new energy efficient and more practical house. In addition to xeriscaping our side yard, I finally convinced my wife that energy independence through solar power with a battery would be the way to go. Not to mention xcel and the federal government offering great rebates. Was it worth it? I couldnâ t tell you as we are 6 1/2 months into choosing Our World and I still am waiting for the final inspection and the â switch to be flipped.â I researched and talked to about a dozen companies, turned most of them down and decided to go with our world. The salesman was great and the financing couldnâ t be beat. Everything went splendidly at first. By mid July we had the panels and battery installed. Our project manager was on top of it and I was blown away and singing Our Worlds praises everywhere. However, things soon started to deteriorate quickly. We kept having appointments set for further work completely disregard led. It started with our time frame being ignored. My wife actually had to waste a day of pto as the techs that were set to be there didnâ t show up. I had to switch around my work schedule as well to allow techs access to my garage. They didnâ t show up again. Or if the did they were tardy. No contact, no notification. In the instances they did come out they were late constantly. We had several occasions where we would be given a 10-3 window of arrival only to have the techs show up at 5 or 530. At one point we had a tech leave bottles of spray paint for my 8 year old son to discover. Luckily he resisted the urge to try them out. We had solar panels left in our backyard haphazardly placed with no communication. Theyâ re much bigger than they look! We at one point had 2 techâ s vans parked smack dab in the middle of our alley so neighbors couldnâ t pass and one of the techs was actually napping in my driveway. We had our project manager telling us the techs were coming out for things that had already been completed and techs griping to us as they were confused as to what their work orders were telling them to do. It was chaotic. It got so bad that my account was escalated to a senior manager at the end of August. He apologized profusely admitted that my â account was an absolute mess,â compensated us for all the mistakes and vowed to ensure everything would be smoothly and we set a 3 week timeline for completion. I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt and wipe the slate clean. Iâ m really confused as to what happened the day of our first inspection. Our tech said he would meet the county inspector at our house at noon. The tech then showed up at 12:20 very flustered. He claimed he was double booked and missed our inspector entirely. I called our newer manager pretty peeved who said the inspector did indeed arrive and left a few notes on how things should be. An electrician arrived a couple days later and we were set for final inspection. I was stoked. But then our project manager contacted me to let me know that the plans were denied. Apparently our county is strict and the work that was done, in July, didnâ t match the plans that were submitted several months prior. I was told 1-3 weeks and here we are, past the 3 week mark and over 6 months after we decided to start our project. On a 12-16 week initial quote. But our new dilemma is that the way the financing was explained to me was completely inaccurate. I was told we could go for no money down and have an interest rate of 8.49%. Our we could â buy down the loan,â put money up front for 3.99%. Seemed like a no brainer. Last week I sent an email notifying the financing company that the project was not completed. But I also inquired as to when they expected the down payment to â buy down,â the interest rate. Apparently we will owe nearly 3 times our estimated price in a year and 3 months."

Solar panel services FAQs

The average cost to install solar panels is around $26,600, and most homeowners pay between $4,500 and $53,000. Keep in mind that these prices don’t consider the federal investment tax credit (ITC), which can effectively reduce those costs by up to 30%. The price you can expect to pay for solar panel installation depends on the size of the system, where you live, the type and brand of panels, and the labor costs. Get price quotes from at least three solar companies in your area to find the best deal.

In most states, solar installers need to be licensed and insured as solar professionals, although some states don’t have specific requirements for installers. You can use our state licensing tool to check if an installer you’re considering hiring holds the proper licensing. No matter where you live, a member of your solar panel installation company must be a certified electrician to connect your panels to your home and the electric grid.

There are a few qualifying questions you should ask a local solar panel company before hiring them:

  • Will you handle permits for the installation?

  • Does your total price include the equipment and labor?

  • How long do you expect the installation process to take?

  • What kind of workmanship warranty do you include with your installations?

  • Who should I contact if I have a problem with my system after installation?

  • Do you install the panels or outsource the work to third parties?

  • Will you file for solar incentives for me?

In most cases, yes, solar panels are well worth the investment. Going solar with your home’s energy is expensive, but, in most states, the panels will pay for themselves by reducing your electric bills. Solar panels don’t produce greenhouse gasses or other pollutants, meaning you can feel good about using this renewable energy source to power your home. Plus, installing solar panels can boost your home value, helping your profit off your next home sale.

Yes, solar panel installation will require permits. The required permits will depend on where you live, as some states and cities have solar-specific permits, while others only require electrical permits to connect to the grid. In either case, it’s best to hire a reputable solar installer in your area, as a representative should handle all of the necessary permitting for you and will include the cost of the permits in your initial solar estimate.
