"SJM Iron Works performed at an excellent level. A modern gate for the front door was fabricated for my home and the quality was commercial grade. Due to the great work, I they asked them to do some landscape and concrete work for my back yard. I couldn’t be any kore happy to stumble across this incredibly talented and professional company. Great quality and competitive pricing!"

"This was one of the best contracting experiences I've ever had. Ignacio and Ever Flowers were excellent on every level. Professional, communicative, timely, great problem-solvers, and just a pleasure to work with. Every thing was done on time and with quality results. They left the site immaculate every day. And the job they did came out better than I could have imagined. And he came in under budget! We plan on using him for several other projects. We had a hard time finding contractors to do this work so I feel very lucky to have found him. Thank you Angi.com (and the reviewers who previously reviewed Ever Flowers) and thank you to Ignacio and your crew!!"

"I quite literally had zero issues with this company. I had a very small concrete job I wanted done and nobody else would take the job at a reasonable price. I saw some other reviews on here of people complaining about blah, blah, blah and whatever but, for me, super awesome experience. Daniel and Christina are really cool people, very personable and just a pleasure to talk with. I have several other projects planned in the future and will most definitely be reaching back out to them. I would also recommend their company to anyone looking to have quality work done at a more than reasonable price. Thanks Daniel and Christina!! You've definitely earned a repeat customer!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

To stain brick, you should use a product specifically formulated for brick, concrete, or other masonry surfaces. These stains are designed to penetrate the porous surface of the brick and bond with it. This is different from paint, which sits on the surface and is prone to peeling, flaking, and trapping moisture that can cause damage. Water-based brick stains are often recommended because they are easy to apply, even for DIYers, and they allow the brick to breathe. Avoid using regular paint on brick, as it will not adhere properly and can lead to future maintenance problems.

Unless you’ve worked in the masonry industry before, it is in your best interest if you hire a pro for any masonry needs. Masonry-related jobs require a high skill level and can be extremely time-consuming. If anything goes wrong, a licensed and insured masonry contractor would be able to take care of the subsequent repairs, giving you additional peace of mind.

In most cases, painting your brick house is a fine idea that can open up new aesthetic possibilities. However, the paint can slightly shorten the life span of brick, especially if moisture gets trapped underneath the paint layer. Once you paint, you’ll have to keep up with maintenance to avoid flaking and blisters.

Modern brick homes have a brick facade over standard framing and sheathing, so the brick offers minimal added structural stability. A home with traditional brick construction is more durable than a stick-built home, as the double-layer brick walls and rebar resist higher lateral wind loads and support heavier loads up top, as well.
