"We hired Setcon to pour appx. 1,000 sq ft of concrete. Just over 24 hours after the pour, cracks began to appear on the walkway connecting the two large slabs. An additional 5 cracks appeared on the primary pads which increased in size as the pads cured, several extending in excess of five feet. During initial consultations prior to the pour, Setcon indicated precautions to prevent cracks such as a wet cure would not be necessary. Additional matters that were poorly executed included an extremely aggressive slope of the pad from the house, unsymmetrical curves on the walkway, low spots in the stamping, and rough inconsistent borders in certain sections on the slabs (i.e. voids). After being informed of the cracks and other deficiencies, Setcon wrote off our dissatisfaction and stated our concerns were purely cosmetic in nature. Although Setcon initially set an expectation their premium price was for premium work, the final product and follow through is nothing short of mediocre."

Certain towns and homeowner associations (HOAs) ban brick mailboxes because of the risk of obstruction. They are sometimes only permitted in cases where four or more homes share a mailbox. In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

If you want to avoid damaging your home's brick, you should always use a stain specifically formulated for masonry projects. These stains are designed to penetrate the porous surface of the brick and bond with it, unlike paints, which sit on the surface and are prone to peeling and flaking. Look for stains labeled for use on brick or other masonry surfaces. Avoid using regular paint on brick, as it will not adhere well and will likely lead to future maintenance issues.
