"Gus Mendez, the owner, was amazing. This was a very complex project repairing cracks in our living/dining room foundation. More extensive problems were discovered as the original 35 y/o foundation was poorly done. Gus figured it all out, removed the old foundation and the 8" of wet dirt underneath and replaced with 8" gravel, then rebar grid at 12", then new concrete and tile. Gus was a highly creative technical engineer and problem solver, and with a highly artistic/esthetic sense. There was really no one else who could have done this, as the only other company that does this had an insufficient assessment for the bid. See photos for the process and outcome."

"Called before heading over, did an excellent job installing our drawer pulls in our kitchen, cleaned up after themselves and charged a fair price for the work. Will be using them again for other projects."

"Vince was very polite, kind, helpful, creative, and hard-working. Our huge backyard was transformed from a desert junk yard into a beautiful yard my neighbors and family are jealous of. Vince and his team put in grass with sprinklers, concrete paths, tons of gravel, huge moss boulders, raised my cinderblock walls, and installed a new handmade wooden gate. Vince went above and beyond to make sure my husband and I were happy, and modified things when we were not. He and his team pulled weeds in our front yard, even though they did not have to. His workers were very polite and nice, spoke English very well (which made it easier to communicate when something came up), worked full days, and cleaned up after themselves. Vince was prompt in answering calls and emails, and very understanding and accommodating when we asked to make modifications to plans. I would definitely hire Streaming Visions again, and recommend them all the time to neighbors and friends.

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Options include concrete, stone, brick, and wood, tailored for specific design needs.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.
