"People have actually asked me where I got the slate!  Both the driveway and the backyard look brilliant.  They showed up when they said they would, did the job in a timely manner and were incredibly professional.  From now on whenever I have any jobs in my house that need concrete I will not hesitate to contact them.

"We first contacted Davis Kitchens in March 2013, after a very unsatisfactory design/estimate experience with another local firm. Lisa Reynolds did an initial design in a few days at no charge. Before we signed a contract, Steve King, the owner, came to our house and double-checked all the measurements to make sure there would be no unanticipated problems. By mutual agreement, we chose Quality Remodeling to do the demolition work and electrical and tile work, in conjunction with Davis Kitchens. Davis contracted with Granite Designs By George for the granite countertops. We signed a contract in March to lock in the cabinet prices, but did not start the actual project until October, because we would be out of the country for several months. The project started on time, was completed on time, and stayed within the agreed budget. The Davis cabinet installer was excellent, and we are very pleased with the quality of the cabinets. Likewise, Jeff Weeks, the owner of Quality Remodeling did a good job on the demolition work, coordinating the electrical work and granite installation, etc. He even arranged for us to get nice and quot;contractorand quot; discounts on the new sink, disposal and backsplash tile. There were a few minor and quot;cosmeticand quot; problems with the cabinets, and once again Davis resolved them in a timely fashion. Overall, this was as smooth a project as we could have possible hoped for, and we are very pleased with our and quot;newand quot; kitchen.

Residential Design questions, answered by experts

Designing a building takes 2-6 months, depending on project size, required permits, and revisions.

To help the designer understand your vision, provide room dimensions, photos, and a list of needs or preferences.

To stage your home yourself, clean your home thoroughly to sell, leaving it gleaming like a five-star hotel. Less is best—always clear away clutter and anything personal so buyers can focus on the beauty of the rooms. Prospective buyers will check the closets, so investing in a storage space may be necessary.

Move furniture around, mix fabrics and decor, and de-cramp the room by removing any unnecessary furniture. A fresh coat of paint always helps, as do natural features like plants.

While finding a local interior designer whose portfolio you like and whose fees match your budget is important, they should always have appropriate qualifications. Some states require interior designers to be licensed, and most will have a degree in interior design and certification through the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ). You can also consult our directory of interior designers to get started.

Professional home staging services can vary between companies and properties, but the primary goal is to set up a house with aesthetic furniture and decor to entice potential buyers. Many stagers offer customizable packages, and you can often pay for additional services. Common offerings include:

  • Design and Planning: Color design, planning each room's layout, and professional interior design services.

  • Furniture and Decor: Choosing and renting furniture, decor, and artwork. This also includes the setup and takedown of all rented materials.

  • Arrangement and Organization: Rearranging existing furniture, decluttering, and organizing the space.

  • Ambiance: Creating a welcoming atmosphere with strategic lighting and accessories.

  • Repairs and Maintenance: Minor repairs, home maintenance, and addressing visible issues.

  • Curb Appeal: Improving the home's exterior with services like painting and garden bed management.

It's best to connect with a professional home stager to see what’s included in their specific packages or to request a custom service.
