Davis kitchens contracted with Desert Stone Inc. for the demolition of the old kitchen, the tile replacement and the electrical work. Desert Stone performed the work in a timely manner and all was going per plan until the cabinets supplied by Davis Kitchens arrived and were installed.
The cabinets were manufactured by Cardell. The stain colors were very mismatched from cabinet to cabinet, drawer to drawer etc.
Steve King (owner of Davis Kitchens) came to our home to inspect the cabinets and agreed that the a stain mismatch was unacceptable and that he would need to get a Cardell factory rep to look at the cabinets. We waited for 2 weeks for the factory rep to come our home. He too agreed that the stain mismatch was unacceptable, but that he did not have the authority to have them replaced. Steve King waited for a resolution from Cardell for 2 more weeks. During this time we were without the use of our kitchen other than a makeshift sink. We called Steve numerous times only to be told that the problem was with Cardell (his supplier) and not with Davis Kitchens.
When it became clear that Cardell was not being responsive to the problem, Steve called us in to offer replacement cabinets from another manufacturer. The cabinets we were offered were of lessor quality and had fewer features than the Cardell. When we pointed out to him that we expected replacement cabinets to have all of the same features as the original, he became upset and acted as if we were being unreasonable.
Steve then offered us cabinets that did have all of the features as the Cardell but at a higher cost to us of $800.00. We agreed to this as it seemed like the only way to get our project moving again.
We then waited 6 more weeks for the replacement cabinets to be manufactured and shipped.
Davis Kitchen then had to remove the Cardell cabinets and install the replacements. When that was completed, we had to wait another week for the countertops to be cut and installed. Desert Stone was then able to come back in and complete there portion of the project.
We feel that Davis Kitchens should have made this right by replacing the cabinets at no additional cost to us, especially since this project was expected to take 6-8 weeks and was not completed for close to 8 months.
We strongly recommend anyone considering a kitchen remodel or cabinet replacement to be wary of Davis Kitchens as they really don't care about the inconvenience, happiness or satisfaction of there customers.
I would like to also mention that Desert Stone performed fairly well, and our dissatisfaction is mainly with Davis Kitchens.
"Let me first correct some of the erroneous information posted in this review. Our direct customer for the cabinet portion of the job was the general contractor, Desert Stone. Our portion of the job was less than half of the $27,000 and only included the cabinetry, not any of the other work. On rare occasions our suppliers fail to make cabinets correctly. That is what happened in this case. The stain on the cabinets was very inconsistent. We reordered a number of doors and drawer heads, but the manufacturer still could not get a good match. We asked for the manufacturer rep to inspect the cabinets which he did. He offered a full credit for the cabinetry. At that point we met with our customer (Desert Stone) and the homeowners to discuss options to move the job along. We offered to replace the cabinets at no charge with those from another supplier. Those cabinets were not acceptable to the homeowners so we then offered a full refund of our part of the job. That option was also rejected. At that point we suggested cabinets from another (but more expensive) supplier. We offered to split the higher cost between our company, the contractor, and the homeowners. All parties agreed to this solution and we ordered new cabinetry from the higher cost and higher quality supplier. At no time did Davis Kitchens walk away from our stated warranty on our work. We offered several possible solutions to the issue and the homeowners chose the one they felt best in the circumstances. Unfortunately, all the back and forth on this problem took some time. It took time for the manufacturer rep to come to Albuquerque. It took time to arrange the credit from the first manufacturer. It took time to present and discuss possible fixes. And it took time for the new cabinetry to arrive. At no time were the homeowners unaware of the steps we were taking. They freely chose from among the options available when presented to them. We apologized more than once for the situation we did not create and worked as diligently as possible, given all the parties involved, to arrive at a reasonably functional solution. It is unfortunate this situation occured. Given the thousands of jobs we have installed over the years this situation is rare. When these things do occur, we always stand behind our warranty. It just takes some time to order and remake a set of cabinets. No manufacturer keeps a complete stock of all of their cabinet styles on a shelf They always have to build cabinets from scratch. Davis Kitchens can only do what can be done in a situation. There are no instantaneous fixes when a major cabinet issues arises. Not for us nor for any other cabinet dealer. Thanks for the opportunity to respond.. Stephen R. King Executive Officer, Davis Kitchens"
"DAVIS KITCHENS CONTRACTED WITH ANOTHER PERSON FOR THE WORK MENTIONED IN THIS REPORT. THIS MEMBER IS NOT A PARTY TO THE CONTRACT FOR THE WORK WE DID. THAT SAID, THERE WERE REAL ISSUES WITH ONLY 1 OF THE 19 CABINETS WE INSTALLED. THE REPAIRS NEEDED WERE RELATIVELY STRAIGHTFORWARD. WE MADE AT LEAST 3 DOCUMENTED ATTEMPTS TO SCHEDULE SERVICE WORK (MID-MAY, MID-JUNE & MID-JULY)AND NEVER RECEIVED A RETURN CALL. WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO RETURN TO THE JOB IN LATE AUGUST AND WERE GIVEN A LIST OF ISSUES DATED MARCH, 2006, WHICH HAD NEVER BEEN PROVIDED TO US. NOT ONE OF THOSE ISSUES WAS MATERIAL TO THE LOOK OR FUNCTION OF THE CABINETRY. DAVIS KITCHENS HAS A WRITTEN ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCESS THAT WAS SIGNED BY OUR ACTUAL CUSTOMER. NOT EVEN ONE OF THE STEPS IN THAT PROCESS WAS FOLLOWED BY OUR CUSTOMER. INSTEAD WE HAVE SEEN A NUMBER OF MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT OUR COMPANY POSTED ON THE INTERNET BY A PERSON WHO IS NOT EVEN OUR CUSTOMER. WE INSTALL ABOUT 3000 JOBS A YEAR. A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THOSE JOBS HAVE ISSUES THAT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED SIGNIFICANT. WE OFFER A 2-YEAR MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP WARRANTY AND A FORMAL DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROCESS TO ADDRESS THOSE RARE ISSUES. WE FEEL IT IS UNFAIR TO BE MALIGNED BY SOMEONE WHO IS NOT OUR ACTUAL CUSTOMER AND WHO REFUSED TO FOLLOW THE MUTUALLY-AGREED UPON PROCESSES, WHICH ARE INTENDED TO RESOLVE THIS TYPE OF ISSUE AMICABLY."
