Customers say: Quality work

"Had a water issue and had to replace part (not all) of our drywall. Called South Jersey Drywall and spoke to Ivan who said he could look at our job later that day. One hour later he arrived, took measurements and said he would call with a quote. Spoke to him that evening, agreed to the quote and he said he could start at 8 am the next morning. They arrived on time and afterwards the guys cleaned up. Returned 2 days later after the spackle dried (at the time they said ) to sand. Did a wonderful job. Would highly recommend this company!"

"We recently hired Family Paint and Drywall to complete some painting and drywall work in our basement. Kevin, the owner, was easy to communicate with and provided pricing quickly after our first meeting. The crew was friendly, tidy and professional. They completed the job a day early and left our house as clean as they found it. We are so happy with the finished product and we will be using them again!"

"Great job! Fair and reasonable price and Scott went above and beyond with repairing my water damaged floor. He replaced the insides of the window pane and addressed any leaking within the vinyl siding outside. All this was done quickly and efficiently. I highly recommend Lindholm Carpentry to anyone who needs work done around the house. What a relief not to have to worry about that problem anymore. Thank you Scott!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

While not always necessary, you can glue a drywall ceiling in addition to using screws or nails. Drywall is typically secured to ceiling joists with fasteners, which is often sufficient. However, adding construction adhesive can offer benefits like preventing sagging, bridging gaps, and reducing air leaks for better energy efficiency. It may also be used for specific acoustic or insulation needs. On the other hand, many professionals advise against it because properly placed screws make the drywall structural, glue doesn't add strength, and it makes future repairs or replacements significantly more difficult. Ultimately, it's best to follow local building codes and project-specific requirements to decide if adhesive is right for your ceiling.

If your premixed drywall mud is dried out or has begun to set in the bucket, you may be able to revive it by adding warm water and stirring. However, the first and most important step is to scrape off any hard, dried bits of drywall that may have accumulated toward the top of the container and throw them away because they will not easily reconstitute back into the drywall mud mix.

You should do a little bit of sanding between adding coats of mud. Knock down any ridges or significantly imperfect areas through sanding, which should help you apply the next coat of mud smoothly. If your first coat of mud is pretty smooth after it dries, a quick sanding is all you’ll need. Don’t forget to wipe away any dust after each sanding process.

There are several things you should not do when installing drywall. Common mistakes include: adding too many screws, over-sanding, not adding backing support, and installing drywall unevenly. You also should avoid screwing into the same place twice, installing Sheetrock with tapered edges on the outside, and making too many joints.

You can usually tell if you have plaster or drywall by touch (plaster is harder, colder, and smoother than drywall) or by tapping on it (drywall sounds hollow, plaster does not). If you still cannot tell, peek under an outlet cover and check the cut edges. The rough edges show the composition of the wall. You will see either drywall (two paper sheets sandwiching gypsum material) or only plaster material (no paper sheets).
