"Smith Power Group are the best. Generator was installed, large enough to power the entire house, and it switched over automatically in the event of a power failure. I was completely satisfied with their work."

"Brian was awesome and fast and courteous. Princeton Electrical was easy to communicate and negotiate with, and offers a fair price for their labor. Had a Level 2 EV charger installed from my townhouse basement to my garage in a few hours without problems."

"Ken was hired to put a sub-panel in the garage, but he notice that rain was getting in the main panel. I hired him to replace the service coming down the side of the house, through the meter box and then the main panel and sub-panel. He did a great job. He was clean and neat and he worked around my work-from-home needs to electricity. He did the service and main panel on a Saturday and I had minimal power disruption. He is friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely hire him again."

"Ron & Brandon came the same day. Sized up the rather small job. Ran the wiring and installed the range hood which the original installers left undone. Cleaned up and were gone in an hour. I would rehire and recommend Spotlight again. Jim N."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

You can expect a diesel generator to last for up to 30,000 hours of use, which works out to 20 to 25 years with the proper maintenance, of course. That depends on how much you use it, so a diesel generator used for emergencies a couple of times a year will last a lot longer than a generator that takes over for a faulty electrical grid every month for a day or two.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.
