"It is my absolute pleasure to write this raving review for Benedict Ugorji (the owner) at Radon Shield LLC and I make no commission recommending him. The radon level was 1.8 pCi/L when I bought my home in Holmdel, NJ, in February 2021. I wanted to lower the radon level for personal health reasons (I have a young 3 year old) not for a real estate transaction (goal level <4 pCi/L). Safe levels were established in the 1970s (The history, development and the present status of the radon measurement programme in the United States of America. Radiat Prot Dosimetry 2015; 167(1-3): 8-14) so maybe new safe levels should be lower than the current recommendation to reflect available technologies for radon mitigation as there is no safe level. I spent $700+ for a new Fantech Rn4EC-4 fan and to seal the French drain serviced through RAdata in Flanders, NJ, and the level was unchanged at 1.6 and 1.9 pCi/L after servicing. RAdata is a disorganized business that will recommend the most expensive system (the energy recovery ventilator) that costs $3000 that other radon companies (I got two second opinions) will say that it does not work. Then RAdata proposed to install a second mitigation system right next to the current system, but could not intelligently justify why the second system would be right adjacent to the current system where there is already subterranean air flow generated by the current system instead of tackling the no subterranean air flow zone at the farthest end of the basement. Please refer to my review about RAdata on Yelp and Facebook and my subsequent reply to their response for details. I kept looking for another radon company and fortunately I found a gem in the unscrupulous radon business. The gem is Benedict whom I unwaveringly and unequivocally recommend. Benedict is responsive – he patiently listened about my radon situation and collected information about my pre and post service radon level and even information down to the granular level like what make and model fan RAdata installed. Benedict came to my home for the consultation, to run the diagnostic tests, he proposed solutions and offered his rational, he did the installation of the second mitigation system (in the area of the basement with no subterranean air flow) from start to finish by himself, he used a more powerful and cheaper fan for the second system (than the one RAdata installed for my first system), and he guaranteed to lower the radon to a specified level in his contract. Benedict charges one flat service fee (whereas RAdata charges the first hour and then at 15 min increments so you are discouraged from asking questions). Benedict took his time to explain to me about how a fan’s performance (like moving air measured in cubic feet per minute or CFM) is affected by your soil’s static pressure (the value on your u-tube manometer). He even followed up with me on a Saturday via text message about the short term radon level measured with the Corentium radon detector (while the charcoal kits are being sampled) and guided me through interpreting the short versus long term average as the values were quite different. We touched based again when the charcoal test came back and the levels were an astonishing 0.5 and 0.6 pCi/L!!!"

"The service was a Radon Remediation System...not listed above. Benedict and his brother were GREAT. I needed it to sell my home and they drive 90 miles and come out in just a couple days. The work involves boring through your basement floor, piping up and out of the house and up above the roof line with a fan and pressure gauge installed. I was apprehensive but trusted their "get right to it" attitude and the finished project is neat, clean and sealed in all necessary areas. Long term exposure to Radon can potentially cause cancer. The home tested as high as 5.2 (4.0 is bad) and after the system was installed another test read 0.3...virtually none. They were easy to deal with by phone, text and email and while I am unhappy that I had to spend the money, I feel it was WELL SPENT. I highly recommend them to resolve such a "mysterious " issue."

"My review is a little mixed. he spent his time explaining a lot, gave great recommendations and estimates on what it would cost to renovate and such. very personable, and in his defense, he asked me if i had any questions. not afraid to get dirty and get onto the roof which was risky with the loose floorboard. also as a member of BP, i have high expectations.
things i did not like:
access to the roof was sealed, and that was it. no drone to take a look up top, no ladder to get up there. so i am paying more to get a roofer to inspect and estimate. he did attempt going through the loos floor boards, which was brave.
there was a lot of mouse poop but we didn't investigate further, just stated that there was no indication of termites. not sure what the difference would be if i opted out of the termite inspection.
the girl on the phone assumed i was lying when i said there was no basement based off zillow or google stating there was a basement, and so i'm pretty sure they priced me as if the home had a basement.
he checked the power outlets in the vacant unit, but not the other outlets in the unit with the tenant, assuming everything works?
things i did like:
he took his time explaining everything and giving the life expectancy of the appliances. even gave repair estimates
knowledgeable about the area and old buildings
found that there may be something on the ground unit as it was hollow, doubt others would have spotted that.
advised on the tank sweep, cutting the tree that was growing over the driveway, electrical box which should be re-done.
overall, the report was adequate, wished we did something about the roof, but his contract states if there is an obstruction or sealed, he won't go in there which sucks for me. swell guy, i'll try others to see how he better compares.

"David inspected a potential home I was looking to purchase and he was so thorough that by the time we were done it gave me a very clear understanding of what issues the house had, what needed fixing and what was downright dangerous. When buying a home, you need a great inspector like David because if you don't get a good inspection you run the risk of buying a big money pit. I bought a home once before but that was a joke compared to the great inspection David did. The home David inspected was a small 1200 sq. home but it was built in 1935 and so he did mention we should expect to see some things pop up. However, he went above and beyond and I am so grateful for his hard work that I will recommend him to others in the future as well and will call on him again for inspections. He also brought Alex, a septic inspector, with him who was also very thorough and very good and provided a very through report. Thank you, David, for your wonderful help! You have no idea how much I appreciate it."

"Roger’s customer service is top notch! He found our leak. Though we had to hire a separate plumber, Roger repaired the ceiling and painted. He worked directly with our HO’s Insurance which was a plus. Will definitely use Helpful Hands if needed in the future. Highly recommended."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

You'll need to test your home for radon after installing the mitigation system, then again every two years. If radon remains elevated, contact a licensed radon professional, either the contractor who installed the system or a different one, and have them evaluate the system. They may need to make some changes to improve its effectiveness and performance.

Mitigation reduces radon levels, protecting your health and complying with safety standards.

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas that poses serious health risks, infiltrating homes through foundation cracks and unnoticed spaces.

Long-term exposure increases lung cancer risks. Prolonged homestay individuals and smokers encounter heightened vulnerability and exposure concerns.

If your home has a sump pit, you can integrate it with a radon mitigation system. You can accomplish this by sealing the pump cover with an airtight lid that accommodates radon vent pipes and sump pump hoses. This allows the vent pipe to redirect the radon gas outside of your home.
