Melnik, earning a reputation for honesty, quality, and meticulous craftsmanship. His work has taken him across Martha’s Vineyard, Western Connecticut, and Central New Hampshire. Most recently, Chris relocated to the New Hampshire Seacoast, rebranding his business as Coastal Points Construction to reflect its growing scope and coastal roots. Chris is a licensed septic system installer known for maintaining exceptionally clean job sites—even when deconstructing the earth’s surface. His ability to excavate efficiently in tight or technical spaces makes every project smoother, safer, and more cost-effective.

Dock Building and Repair questions, answered by experts

Minor repairs like replacing boards can be DIY-friendly, but structural or underwater repairs require professional expertise.

Docks can last between 20 and 30 years, provided regular maintenance has been performed. Upkeep tasks like staining your dock annually to prevent water damage, repairing broken elements quickly, and using dock covers regularly will help extend your dock’s life. Your dock is likely nearing the end of its lifespan when it shows signs of rot, rust, and foundation damage.

Most dock repairs take 1-5 days, depending on the extent of the damage and weather conditions affecting the work schedule.

If your boat dock and seawall appear to be failing at the same time, taking on the projects together may be easier from a permitting perspective. By doing a big project, you can ensure that everything in your property is safe and up to code. Depending on the size and condition of your boat dock, average boat dock repair cost can range from $834 to $5,432.

Boat docks need maintenance every year. Get an inspection at the end of each warm weather season, and remove the dock from the water if possible (if it’s made of wood) when not in use. You can also treat the wood to lessen the impact of moisture damage.
